Dealing in 9/11 Certified Coins

How does everyone feel ethically about buying, selling, and trading 9/11 certified coins? I'm just curious, but I feel uncomforable.

Personally, I dont see any problem with buying or selling them as long as the seller isnt trying to pull emotion strings about it. I would add that I have never owned one.

  • I would like to own one for my son just for the historical aspect of it. But I too am uncomfortable purchasing one for fear of putting money into the pocket of someone who is simply trying to exploit the tragedy. If I knew without a doubt 100% the money would go to a charity to benefit the victims, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a few of them.

Mark wrote a wonderful article about the special "100" series 9/11 coins which was published in the Numismatist a few months back. These coins which were all sold on the US Coin Forum are very special.

I don't like how all the recovery items were hyped. That struck me as profiteering off others death.

On the otherhand, the 100 NY Quarters came about as a fund raiser for victims' families. These are very symbolic. Most were given to people who made donations to the cause. Mine (#95) will not leave my collection. There will not be much dealing in these since they trade infrequently.

My first response was in reference to coins sold as "recovered from ground zero"

In response to wondercoin, yes these are very nice and my #57/100 will not leave my collection either.

  • I purchased one of the WTC Recovery Coins that was certified MS69 by PCGS.
I guess, with their certification, I'm satisfied it's original. I put it, along with magazines
& newspapers away for the grandkids so they might learn something.

  • Wow, coincop's icon is pretty cool! I guess I feel a little better about it. It sounds like time has passed and the days of worrying about profiting are gone, and now these are now historical collector's items.

  • If I remember correctly, Scotiabank sold its coins there (100% to charity) to a dealer who then went to PCGS and profited considerably from it.

I'm not quite sure if the coins were actually in one of the buildings, or from one of the WTC storage facilities nearby, which in case the items in question (SAE,etc) would have no real attachment to the whole thing.

  • I don't own any or have any problem with the coins as a memorial to this tragic event. However, the price gouging on these coins is downright criminal. When prices approach reality and the crooked profiteer's leave this market I most certainly will purchase one for it's historical importance.

  • There was the special series of 100 coins to generate funds for the NY Fire Fighters that Wondercoin organized and Lazeroo is buying up Lazeroo's thread.

And then there are the thousands of coins recovered from the vaults deep under the WTC. These have various PCGS labels that say "WTC Ground Zero Recovery". I think these might be what CoinHunter2003 bought. Welcome CoinHunter2003, it sounds like you assembled a neat rememberance.

I bought two of the recovery Silver Eagles as part of a large collection. Then I sold them. I'm not sure how I feel, exactly, about them. My cousin was on the top floor when the tower collapsed.
