Complete 1975T Graded Set On eBay

First, let me start by saying it's not my set for sale.

Here's the link.

In putting my set together, I competed against this seller many times. I have to believe he has more than $10k tied up in his set simply because he chose to go to the mat for so many of the cards. But listing a complete set - as a set - on eBay in this market seems a tough proposition.

I saw that. Whose set is it?

Sometimes I wonder if the comcept of layout and marketing is lost.

    A quick blurb, no pics?

Maybe the guy dosn't understand HTML layouts, but he could have put together a nice page that
would have drawn the bidder's in more.

    Just my .2.

    Loves me some shiny!

I agree. I will never understand how a guy can put something like that up there and not put any pics. Ever heard of salesmanship?

<<I have to believe he has more than $10k tied up in his set simply because he chose to go to the mat for so many of the cards>>
Looks like the guy isn't a very smart investor. His feedback shows he has started a PSA graded 1978 set. Yikes!
  • Whats up with the dis on the 1978 set?, if you had ever attempted putting it together you would know better, its a tough set to put together, and if you do it right you can turn a good profit on them, i have

I do not believe this person lists his sets on the registry. He recently broke up a complete (minus 2 cards) PSA 8 1963 Fleer Set on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I purchased a number of the lower POPs via BIN image. I can tell you that the guy is legit and does ship out in a timely manner. By the way..he doesnt take paypal.

Well it looks like the set is listed on the registry but at only 90%..strange. He did not have his 1963 Fleer set on the registry though.

Lafayette43 is a very strong bidder, often paying any price once he decides he wants something. He was heavily into the 1975 when I started about 18 months ago and he was paying about $18 for common 8s (though they weren't all very common at the time). Then he moved on to 75 minis, and elsewhere. If he's buying 78s now, that just means it'll be tougher to win cards at a low price for a little while.

I did a scoring of this set and the GPA comes out to 8.07 (8.067559), so it would come in at #4 on the registry. Depending on where he's set his reserve, it could yield a nice profit from breakup, or a great starting place for upgrading to compete with Frank, Wetzel, Kurt and Steve. Vargha offered $5K for a complete set in 8, so we'll see how it plays out. I will be very interested to see where the action is on this set as high pops are very dead right now, but the tougher cards are jumping.

An offer of $5k? Even with the market as far down as it is, even if you're frugal you may not even be able to do it for the $10k which is the buy-it-now for this.

gfb....I did not mean to "dis" the 1978 set. I made that comment because I think there is a general consensus that the prices of 1978s will continue to drop as the huge amount of supply get graded (see numerous previous threads).

If you are collecting for the fun of it, then by all means have at it.

If you are collecting so you can re-sell it, like this guy is re-selling his 1975 set, well.......

As I thought about it, I'm reasonably convinced that he listed the set to see what it would bring rather than making a serious attempt to sell it. The seller is on the registry and knows full well there are four or five guys over 85% but not complete. The break value on the cards those people need to complete their sets would be reasonably high. That's not including the 9s, and he has some reasonably tough 9s. Plus, he's already broken a 63 Fleer set so he knows there is a higher value/return in a set break than in selling complete. Also. . .I'd think if he was really interested in selling it as a set, the Superior auction at National may have proved a better forum. I don't know.

Not sure Mike...speaking from experience...the BIN's he had on his on many of his 1963 Fleers were..lets say..very favorable. There were several cards where the buy it now was half of what the card sold for in the past 2 weeks. Heck I bought card #66 for $150.00 BIN...there was another one up with a few days to go and it ended at $300+.

In fact...true story..I stayed at my work computer for an extra 2 hours that night...refreshing and hitting BIN's on the cards as he listed them one by one.

Im not sure what kind of research this seller does before breaking up or selling a set.

  • WOW I'm kinda glad I don't know how much I've got into my set. I made the decision to not keep track but to stick to certain budgetary factors. I've probably submitted 150 of my own 75's and bought or traded quite a few from the psa boards . The majority have come from ebay. I think I've only won 3 cards in the last month sticking to my max. bid price. A lot of this set is fetching quite healthy prices the last couple of months if you've got the right cards theres money to be made. Now my point about this set even if I had the means to purchase I don't think I would. I'm truly enjoying the journey, winning ,losing, getting sniped and occasionally beating the snipe. Learning of these boards and the people across this country who share my Quest for the cardboard. I don't know about how I'll feel once this set is complete but I sometimes think I'll be a little let down ,Mike any truth to my feeling ? I guess thats why I'll probably go onto another set. I suck at typing so I often don't write but I really think these boards + collectors are really something The thing with Carlos was an out pouring of humanity at its best. The buy it now price does seem really reasonableimage

    John-
I saw that one about 3 minutes after you and was really ticked I missed it- its one of the last 3 I need. I hit of few of his as well, he did ship quickly and everything went really smoothly. I think he was basing his prices on SMR, which is juuuust a bit off (best Uecker impression I can do) on Barber and Odell.

I have a question for you guys...all things considered...what do YOU feel was the fair market value for the set.

    John
  • Personally, I thought the BIN price was a pretty fair asking price, since cstephen2 is me!

  • gfb- Kind of sensitive?

I don't think "yikes" qualifies as dissin' the (1978 baseball) set.

In fact yikes is being kind. Grading all those worthless commons for investment would probably be the equivilent of burning money in the fireplace.
I understand sentimentality, I have it for the 1979 football set.
But spending $8.00 to grade a 50 cent card so you can get less than $8.00 for it is not smart.
You might as well send your money to Bill Gates.

  • Thanks Mike. I've got 5 complete 1975 raw sets (2 regular and 3 minis), and next to the 1972 it's my favorite. I figured at $15 a card, including a PSA 9 Yount, it was a fair price when you figure in the (very) few opportunities to get a complete set in one fell swoop without paying a 15% buyer's fee at one of the auctions. I'already own about 60 graded 1975's. but those are all stars and after comparing those with the ones in the new set I figure I can get a pretty good part of my purchase price back by selling the dupes.

Frank - except for the above mentioned stars, the set is new ground for me. Except for my Kellogg's collection, the rest of my PSA collection is centered around players, not sets (sets listed under the general heading of "Steve's Excellent.... are mine). I am however, just starting a 1972 set which will keep me entertained and frustrated for years to come.

tbub> "I don't know about how I'll feel once this set is complete but I sometimes think I'll be a little let down ,Mike any truth to my feeling?"

Well. . .all I can tell you is my situation. And the simple answer to your question is "no". I really don't feel let down at all. It was a fair amount of work to complete the set and I'm proud of it. I didn't do it to resell it, I did it because it's a set I enjoy. Quite frankly, I don't have time to feel let down. When I completed the 75 set, I was already over 55% complete on my 72 set and that's been fast and furious. But wait. . .there's more! Being the true glutton for punishment that I am, I recently decided to pursue a 1973 set as well. I just got hooked on those action shots. image

    Steve,

I was a little slow - I was going to hit the BIN for the free shipping but you beat me to it. image

Seriously, I didn't realize who you were until now. I've been trying to catch up to you on the Stargell set for the past month or so and I've gotten some great deals (still waiting for that '63 PSA 8 to show up with a BIN of $100 image ).

I do think $15+ per card for the '75 set is a bit too much right now. I have the set 50% complete right now with almost all of the stars/rookies included and 42 PSA 9s, and I'm significantly less than the $15 per card cost. I haven't been too active on the set lately, but I anticipate the cost of most of the low pop commons coming down over the next year or so. I hope to complete this set for under $10 per card, including stars - I don't think that's an unrealistic goal at this point either. image

    JEB.
  • Dave - Thanks, but watch out for me on the upgrades to PSA 9!! image

JEB - I suspect you will continue to have a window to catch up with me on the Stargell Master set as my attention is focused on stuff like K's and 1972's now. If you get close however..... well that's another matter. As Stump can attest, I'm vicious when attacked.......imageimage

  • I'll be locked and loaded! I did however pick up something at the National that made the entire trip worthwhile - a 1973-1975 era Stargell game used bat autographed bat! Got it authenticated on the spot, and it's really sweet.

    Steve

Great luck to you on the 9's. I have stayed away from them for the most part only bidding if I need the card. My baby sets are the 68 and 69. Those sets I am an animal on. If you do pick up some 9's and want to sell the 8's I am a buyer if I need the card.

I saw that 75 set when it hit ebay. I always resell so I usually pay less than most people. With PayPal and Ebay fees, commons only net you about $5 per card, so after doing quick math, the $5000 opening bid didn't even seem worth it for me.
  • This sale is a good sign for the vintage graded set market. It is my opinion that everyone wins.
I was just informed that the 1974 psa 95% psa 8 graded set sold with a buy it now. That is the same set that was once Carlos Apontes(minus all the 9s that the seller had sold off).If I remember correctly luxorywines bought that set with a few hundred 9s for right about the same price he just sold it for. That was about a year ago.Looks like he did pretty well.I know it is still about supply and demand and all it takes is one buyer but what does it say about the graded set market?Just sharing some thoughts.

It's a great thing for sure! At the National I saw some Psa 8's from 1974 topps baseball going
for $3-$4. I'm glad to see these b.i.n.'s

I think if your patient and a little lucky you can do ok selling a graded set complete.

I wish I could pick up a set like that in one swoop. I'd be proud to own it whether I bought
it in one shot or piece by piece. I especially like the 75 set. It brings back memories of
my dad buying me packs and bringing them home every payday on Friday. If the coin is
not a problem then I say buy it now!

  • Guys,

The market for complete graded PSA sets is fairly strong. This is the 5th complete or partial PSA set I have sold in past 8 months all near book or slightly over. (I have sold 2 partial 34 Goudey Sets (sold one tonight for $9000), a complete 36 Goudey Set (sold for almost 3x book), A 1970 Kellogg's Set ,and the 74 Topps Set.) I have made reasonable money on all these sets. image
