Personally - I couldn't care less... I think it's great to be able to find out if a coin or coins are on the market...
just observing that the scorn is not equally distributed.

<< <i>How can you justify a $12 shipping charge? >>
Assuming it's 5oz. and insured for $400, actual registered postage is $10.14... if it sells at $500 is goes up... plus packing fees makes this seem fair... he'll get just as much as someone who ships first class with a bubble mailer after actual postage is paid.

I have received a negative feedback for charging a buyer EXACTLY what my auction stated. The buyer thought I charged too much so he neg'd me. The buyer just could not figure our that I charged for S/H/I, but what he saw on the package was less than that (since all he saw on the package was the S/I). The buyer did not account for any of my packaging materials.
Good luck.

BTW: Thanks airplanenut you are smart beyond your years.
Keep in mind that if it gets lost in the mail any other way other than registered the max you get is 250$.
My dad is a mailman. I know these things. Anything over 250 you need to send registered to be completely safe.

Thanks Now how about ending that proof set auction early for someone who's wise beyond his years?
I've collected on two specific packages that were "lost" that were both valued over $250. Quite a bit over $250, actually. Both coins were shipped first class/insured. I had to play the waiting game, but the refund checks came in.
If I was going to bid, on say the buffalo nickel, I'd probably email the seller and ask if I could have the coin shipped first class with full insurance. Would cost half of what registered would cost, and I would have complete faith that the package would show up. If the seller didn't feel comfortable with anything but registered, I'd just adjust my bid. No big deal.
Nice coins listed there. I'll be watching one of those.......................

I understand that registered mail isn't cheap, but I am. I have sent right around 700 pkgs in the past 3 years and two have been lost. Both First Class. (Both insured.) I haven't lost one Priority Mail pkg. On something $500 and over, I always send registered. Anything less, it's up to the customer, Registered or not. But EVERYTHING goes insured, of course. The customer doesn't have a choice in that matter.
Anyway, too each his own. You wanted comments and you had too many favorable ones posted. I hate to be the bad guy, but you know this forum DOES have it's standards, and no one else stepped up to the plate.

I don't think you know everything you think you know.
Go to the USPS Web Site - Insurance
You will find the USPS "Provides up to $5,000 indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article. Available for Package Services, First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, Standard Mail (prices subject to residual shape surcharge), and official government mail endorsed "Postage and Fees Paid"."

I wasnt trying to be pugnacious. Hope you didnt take it that way.
I understand what you are saying about the insurance thing. What is little known is that "coins, artwork, paper money or other type of collectible type items" is that they are only responsible for 250$ of the value. Now keep in mind that you can CLAIM that something else was in the package and claim it as such, but numismatic items fall under a special category. I will have to ask BigD5 what circumstances his were claimed on. My father has heard nightmare situations on this stuff.
Here is a question. If first class insured covered this situation, then why would registered mail exist? Registered takes longer and has the same insurance coverage as anything else according you your thoughts but costs more?. Why?

Registered mail has a much higher upper limit on insurance (I believe $25,000 vs $5,000). I would have to go to the web site to confirm, but I think those are correct.
Registered mail also is very important for those special documents that must be kept under lock and key and show a custodial chain. I am certain some legal documents must fall under this category.
Registered mail costs more because it is the most secure form of mail. If I understand your question correctly, one could argue why there is such a thing as Express or Priority mail. Each type of service costs more than the next, but each has a different handling mechanism and/or delivery time associated with it.
I would love to see a reference to the USPS code that refers to an insurance limit on numismatic items fixed at $250.

P.S. Sorry if my reply came across as a bit too harsh. After re-reading it, it did sound a bit harsh.
The auctions look like you're a pro at eBay! Nice job! Nice photos!!
My comment on shipping- I always use insured USPS Priority Mail w/free Delivery Confirmation (free if you print label at home).
That way I can log on USPS & see when the item was delivered.
I don't really worry about using Registered Mail because the thieves that the USPS employs stole one of my registered packages
on the way to PCGS. The fact that is was registered made no difference. They paid the insurance the same as if I sent it Priority Mail,
so I keep the auction price down by not using the registered service AND PM is way faster (almost always). I would use the registered
service if it was an incredibly expensive item though, as I think in such a case the buyer would expect it.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
The moral of the story is to ship the way you can sleep at night. For me, that is usually registered.
On another note, I want to put in my shameless plug in for Bill's coins. I bought this one from him.
Check it out at www.geocities.com/m984116/
It is the liberty nickel that I am transferring to the front page.
I was very happy with the coin (as you can see!!)

I think that in the future, I'll ship for free and send via USPS according to the purchase price. That way everyone is happy. I hope...
Good luck.

<< <i>Hey twodogs, if you bid on and win any auction I currently have running on eBay, I'll pay the postage. Registered Mail is not cheap but it is handled better that any other form of USPS delivery option. And that is what I want my customers to get. A top quality, expensive product delivered to them securely and in a timely manner. But if the consensus is to mail these coins by Bubba Air Freight, Inc., please PM me and I'll be happy to comply and adjust shipping charges accordingly. BTW: Thanks airplanenut you are smart beyond your years. >>
Great auctions! Clean photos with precise descriptions. I am somewhat surprised no one has teased you yet though for the NEG you left a Seller for not giving you feedback? (Or, maybe I just read your response incorrectly-).

When I first started on ebay, I used to think that I needed to cover every penny as far as shipping went. Packing materials, gas for going to the P.O. and so forth, now i take a little hit on everything I ship.
I've found that (And people on this very board first pointed it out to me.) a lot of people figure in the shipping cost when they are bidding, and if you keep those costs low, people will bid quite a bit more on the coin. Usually more than the difference between the low and higher shipping costs.

I expected more competition as this auction ended, I am pleased.

P.S. Remember, we've already moaned and groaned about the $12.00 registered mail fee, not an issue to me, THE buyer!
<< <i>And I offered the seller the option of sending it to him for $6 Priority Mail if so desired. That is one heck of a nice coin, BTW. >>
I think so too, thanks again! I collect these in MS-64 as 65's seem to go through the roof in Morgan's for most years/mintmarks. This will be in my collection for a long, long, time.

USPS Publication 122 Highlight: Claim Values, Para b., page 10: Fair market value of stamps and coins of philatelic or numismatic value, as determined by a recognized stamp or coin dealer or current coin and stamp collectors newsletters and trade papers.
USPS Insured Mail Highlight: Provides up to $5,000 indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article. Registered mail goes up to $25,000.
I know the above is true because:
1) I'm the APO Officer for my unit and have to deal with this stuff almost every day and
2) I did lose a $600 coin in the mail to me. The seller, a good friend and fellow member of this forum was reimbursed the $600.
The USPS web page is one of the easier US Government web pages to find info on. Give it a try sometime! Dave
