71 2003 PR70DCAM SAE's so far - is $1800 a bit high?

A dealer newsletter is offering a PR70DCAM SAE for $1800 - it's a POP 71 coin already out of 2703 graded.

At 71, there are more 2003 70's than all other years combined. It seems to me $1800 would have been a good price last month.

Relayer: Not with reference to the SAE specifically - I have said this many times before on these boards - IMHO, there are wonderful modern coins to pursue, some of which are spectacularly scarce. And, there are also some "not so wonderful" moderns to pursue, where the pricing makes absolutely no sense to me relative to the scarcity.

The "trick" is to not "throw out the baby with the bathwater" - the modern market is simply way too broad to define with a single example or two of silly coin offerings or sales. Remember, there is a "baby" in that bath water image

I would assume it is the same dealer. R&I. He wants $3,500 for the '98 with a Population of 13.

Hmmm...I think I would rather own a raw 68 or 69 for the $6.00 or $7.00 they are currently selling for. If there will be other sellers down the road willing to pay that amount or more, then you probably have your answer.

wow, that much for a coin made this year, and transferred from the dies to a gov't capsule with gloved hands, then to a PCGS slab, seems like a lot of money for a perfect coin with so little history, so few "stories to tell"

If I had $1800 to throw at a coin I'd buy this one

and use the change to buy a 2003 PR69DCAM SAE or three image
(jadecoin has the above coin listed at $1500 i think)

  • There were only 2188 SAE's graded in 2002 and 4289 in 2001. At this rate there's going to be at least 5000+ graded in 2003 and with 2 1/2% recieving the 70DCAM designation, this could very well be a pop 125 or even higher coin. Even if this rate does not stay consistant it beat the highest pop SAE by 10 times. I would have to believe that we need to wait and see where the price finally ends up. This is not a good time to plunk that kind of money down on a coin that is sure to be selling at alot lower price in the near future. I could be wrong, but I think this SAE will drop below $1000. The largest Pop SAE prior to 2003 is 11 and that's the 2001 SAE.
