Seeking advice for 1981 Topps grading nuances

I purchased a case of 1981 Topps vending and was just looking for any pointers that anyone could offer me before I started going through the case.....I am looking for generalities that would serve me well when looking at all cards, and also any subtle things to look for on any specific cards (namely the stars).....also, for any 1981 set collectors, if there is anything I can keep an eye out for on your behalf, let me know....

Kep> Eventually, Gator5 will reply to this. When he does, listen to what he has to say. Noone has examined more 81T cards looking for high-grade examples than him.

Listen to what Mike says Gator is definately the guru of 81's. I think you may find though he prefers the rack cases.

  • You guys got that right. Gator is THE MAN for 81 Topps. No human alive has seen more 81 raw than the gator.

    Kep,

I would say pending what you paid for the case its a bad investment overall
for I have cracked a few and seen my share of vending 81's and the story is
this. Even if the case was shipped to you straight from topps you will yield no
more than 125 9's and thats a given fact. Will you see a ten I doubt it.

These are the factors that make vending suck in 81.

A: On the inside of the box itself there is a lip which pretty much dents the
    same corner on every card.

    B. Storage for the borders will be dingy and the cards just not that crisp.

C: And finally its vending from 81.

So before you really get geared up for a loss I'd consider even cracking it!!!

Just my 2 cents with over 250 thousand cards scoured.

    Gator,

What would you recommend as being the best packaging to get 81 topps for grading? Vending, rack pack, cello, wax, etc. ?

    Creeper,

As a general rule goes as follows.

    Rack
    Wax
    Cello
    Vending
  • I wanted to let Gator give his $0.02 before I gave you my sad tale with an 81 vending case. I was barely able to fill a full set, and even then, I was using cards to fill slots in my set that are at best PSA 6s. I hope you have better luck, but I'm not hopefull for your chances. Keep all of the star cards separate - even the bad ones, so you can have something to fill your set slots.

I've had horrible experiences with cellos. Bad enough the I won't buy them for any price. I would rank vending ahead of cellos. I don't have too much experience with 81's though. Mostly 70's stuff and 1980 Topps. Just my opinion though.
  • Here's the formula to the 81's... let the Gator eat big and show up for the quality scraps. It's been documented here before that folks are cracking his 8's and turning 10's. I've seen the beast and honestly didn't know they could look like that. Nobody prints and cuts his own cards better than Mattimage: Eventually he'll get his and take care of the rest of us. Until then BEWARE OF VENDING!!!
