1858 3 CENT (SEGS MS64)

I just purchased this for $590 including shipping. Know nothing about them, just thought it looks nice, is this pretty common for these? Im only wondering about the hairlines and PCGS! If it looks cleaned, Ill just leave in SEGS holder, I think they are coming around! COIN

    Wallstreetman,
I can't grade the coin or it authenticity of toning in this format but from the helicopter it looks like a nice coin. I do not own any SEGS coins and would not vouch for their grading of Trimes.

  • Seller seems to think it would cross into PCGS. I really have a good feeling about his integrity!

I don't like SEGS, but that is one of the prettiest coins I have seen in a long time. Good luck!
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • Segs is pretty unreliable but sometimes you get lucky. I used to have 2 3 cent nickels, both graded 63. One looked to be about 55, and the other more along the lines of 65+. Needless to say, I kept the nicer one and gave to other to a2labmom. image

  • Who should I show it to at Long Beach?

common sense tells me if this coin could make it into an NGC or PCGS slab it would be in one. This coin retails for $1,500 and I think with the color it would be worth much more so why is it being sold for a fraction of it's worth? mike
  • Maybe Ill get lucky!

Yeah, a $2k coin (a premium allowance for the toning), for $560. Name your cliche. The only reason that coin is in a Segs holder is because it flunked at NGC and/or PCGS.
That's all my opinion. Even if the coin crosses at ms/62, I think you did ok, for the price. It's pretty regardless of grade.

wallstreetman, I think even if the coin gets graded a couple points lower by PCGS you still got a good deal and a really nice looking coin. mike

I really don't trust SEGS holders either. Just hope it doesn't come back AT! It is a nice looking coin!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Marty, you are not as mad as everyone thinks. That trime is AT all the way. Body bag city. Sorry Wallstreetman. Wanna take any bets on the results of your crossover? Of course, PCGS would not know AT if it bit them in the A$$.
  • Im not worried about the toning, its natural, not sure about orginal!

Where and when was the meeting place in Long Beach?

it is a nice coin. the exact grade is up to YOU (not pcgs or segs)

  • Wow, you can see the luster coming through even from this distance. Trimes are tough to grade period! I would love to see this one up close. Is that the toning you get from a Wayte Raymond (sp) folder ? Where's my greysheet!!

THERE IS NO SANTA CLAUS IN THE COIN BUSINESS.... Coin has been cleaned and retoned and will NOT cross to PCGS but for $500 probably a "fair" deal....Jon

  • I'll be at Long Beach on Saturday. However I know so little about trimes I couldn't offer an opinion on your coin. It would be neat to see it though!

I like it and don't mind SEGS. I think they have the best holder on the market and Larry Briggs is pretty good with these earlier coins.
Didn't the last survey in CoinWorld show SEGS catching most of the problem coins even at the slight expense of showing up PCGS?

If the images are accurate, in terms of color, I believe it to be unnatural.

    Wallstreetman,
Now that Coinguy has shown interest in the topic, I suggest you show it to Mark Feld at the LB show (Pinacles table).
He will give you a first hand and straight eye opinion.

he states the coin has some hairlines, they are there because it has been cleaned, and the toining does not appear to be natural......will it cross......i will be very suprised if it does.........
  • Pretty Trime but at a MS63 Price? Repost it when you receive it, with a little more magnification and see what it looks like.
  • Hairlines? Yeh, very fine (sparse), UNDER MAGNIFICATION! I just had a Franklin get slabbed, it had hairlines UNDER MAGNIFICATION, a member said it would be BB! I dont think they will use that against it, but Im use to dealing with larger coins, so maybe their more picky on these! It still looks natural to me, just unnatural compared to its peers, I wonder where it was stored!

  • Speaking of trimes...

Very pretty. I have no authoritative opinion on it, but I do know that my eyes like it a great deal image.
  • Of course I havent seen it yet! Hopefully, it isnt enhanced like he says, seems to say it like it is.

Mark, what would be a good time for you and anybody else to check it out?

WSM - feel free to stop by our table during the show.

If I am not there (I'm often walking or running around looking for newps), just (politely, please) ask anyone there, to call me on my cell phone. Depending upon my mood at that particular moment, I will either be right with you OR, leave the show for the rest of the day.image
  • See ya there!

  • Well, it DNC!

I should have stated Cross At Any Grade, PCGS says the toning is natural! I wish they would have contacted me before they sent it back, I didnt get the usual email which gives me time to contact them!

What would you do? Leave it or resubmit, at Long Beach opinions ranged from 62 to the current grade!

Resubmit so we can see what PCGS calls it...still dont think the toning is real....

Don't underestimate SEGS-they can be as tough as anybody. You can cherry lots of stuff in SEGS holders.
