Pedigree - Not This Time (Rules Clarification)

Well, I tried. I e-mailed to confirm I could pedigree my modern CS type set for free. Got the word back from Gayle today--modern sets are not eligible for free pedigree. Nor are mint sets, proof sets, and a few others. Sure enough this is right in the benefits page. I could do it for $5 per coin, but I don't think so.

If it's in the top 5 I beleive you can get a modern set pedigreed if you pay the $5 per coin holdering charge.

However, I don't think the market-place will have much demand for a 1976 25c PR69DC that says "Joe's Collection" on the label (other than perhaps Joe)

Yes-I could do it for $5 per coin. It's not worth that to me. When I thought it was free, that would have been worth shipping to and from Newport Beach.

    Did Gayle explain why?

Not specifically beyond it's noted in the benefits section.

I found this in the benefits section:

"(Note: the free pedigree service does not apply to modern sets, proof sets, mint sets, and a few other issues.) "

This is actually a new statement, the old one just said that not all sets were eligible but didn't provide any details.

Proof sets? Do they mean a proof set for a single year, or any proof coinage? The top five sets of proof Jeffersons (1938-1964) are NOT eligible for free pedigree anymore? Why the heck not?

What is the demarcation point for moderns? Many would call Franklin halves moderns. Or, Mercs, or Walkers. Are they eligible?

I can understand the limitation applied to series' that are still being minted, but where is the line drawn? Look at BNE's example of proof Jeffs, 1938 to 1964. While the Jefferson is still being minted, they certainly aren't minting any more that would fit in that set.

I think they mean modern type sets. And by proof & mint sets, they would be referring to the single year sets.

I got same info. You need to be in the top 5 sets of all time - NOT JUST THE TOP 5 OF ALL CURRENT SETS. Moderns are DEFINED AS the same as the SUBMISSION definitions - 65-date. At least that's my understanding after talking with Gayle. As for the $5 - I guess it depends on how many coins in the set. If not many, it's just a drop in the bucket. For a set like Lincoln's w/Varieties 59-date it will cost over $500.

One of the considerations that needs to be made by someone considering Pedigree is exactly how the pedigree name will appear and look on each coin in the set. The PCGS label has six lines. Line 1 contains the date and denomination. Line 2 contains the grade. Line 3 is where the pedigree information goes. It is also where variety information such as "small date", type I, SMS, etc goes. Line 4 contains the series number and the coin number. Line 5 contains the PCGS coin ID and certification number. Line 6 contains the bar code data. If someone has a collection which includes some variety information on line 3, it is my understanding that the pedigree will have to share that line also. With a digit limit of 22 characters including spaces and variety info, it can distract from the final results on the label. Since the pedigree is basically intended for the person's own collection, I believe a person should think long and hard whether getting his/her coins pedigreed is best for him/her. JMHO. Steveimage
