If those are the only choices, and they pay the same, I will choose being a grader. Of course, I am not good enough but with enough time I would be. And I would see all the cool coins. As a dealer, you see some cool coins, but as a grader you see more. And a dealer will always wine and dine a grader at a show to lobby the grader to grade favorably. image

I would much rather be a dealer. Grading coins all day would make me wacko; I can't believe there would be enough time to enjoy them. Plus, how many 1964 proofs can one look at. I'm sure that would be somebody's hell!!! A dealer is tough, but at least you would get to talk to people (jerks and all).

Dealer, hands down. I could never go back to working for somebody else.

I have better fantasies than those 2 choices......image

  • If there was a salary attached to the job, then a dealer. A dealer doesn't have to work, they just schmooze the public!, and play with fancy coins. A grader has to slave all day, and his mistakes are out there for the whole world to laugh at. On the other hand, in real life I would rather be a grader, since a dealer has to work his butt off to make sure he can pay his bills - and there is no salary. JMO

Handle other people's coins all day long determining what level of preservation they're in much like a grader of eggs or potatos

    compared to

competing in the marketplace using your wits and skill to do buy and sell and learn about coins while dealing with other humans of a constantly varying variety?

    Gee, that's a toughie.

Dealer, I like to travel, look at coins, and talk to people, and talking with a raw coin in your hand is a very bad idea.
