Being a coin dealer is a great way to make a living

With all these negative threads about coin dealers I'd just like to state how I feel about our business. In all honesty I can say I a very happy person. I work two days a week at Dillon Gage Metals. Dillon Gage is a major bullion dealer and I handle the rare coin business that comes into the office. If you have ever dealt with Dillon Gage you know they are a 100% honest and fair company. I basically do what I want and as long as I produce income they leave me alone. The rest of the time I do whatever I want. Whether it's hitting the shops, listing stuff on ebay or going to a coin show my time is my own and I do whatever I want. I just buy and sell coins. Don't deal in any second rate grading services or have to overgrade anything to make a living. I feel I treat my customers fairly and in the past year have received over a dozen leters from customers thanking me for the coins I sent. In all the years I've worked for other people that never happened. When I set up at coins shows in my own name I only once had a colllector annoy me and I played a part in the bad chemistry between us. I like the people I deal with. I do get annoyed with a lot of the dealers but we are an independent lot so that's to be expected. I still love looking at coins, trading coins and being around the business. I can't think of anything else I could do where I could have so much fun and make a good living to boot. I am a very fortunate person.
As far as collectors poor attitudes towards dealers I really think dealers bring it on themselves. There are so many traps for collectors to fall into and so many dealers willing to expoit them. Overall the dealers who come on this board are the good guys. There are many dealers that are good guys that aren't on the boards but the bad guys wouldn't dare come on. I wish the world was perfect and everyone was fair but it just doesn't work like that. Support the good guys and leave the rest.
Coin collecting is a great hobby. Even after all the years being around them it's hard to explain. Something about the mixture of the history, the hunt for good coins, the constant learning process, the art of grading, the fellowship of other collectors/dealers and pride of ownership that makes it wonderful. I enjoy what I do and think I make an honorable living.

As much as I love collecting I also enjoy (to a limited degree) selling coins. It is very rewarding to sell a coin and have a very happy collector find that really nice piece that has been eluding them.
Numismatics should be fun!

I concur
I agree with ARCO as well. Anytime you can be one of the .1% of people that work and are supported by their passion, I say wonderful. Those are the dealers that have the best shops and deal the best with people.
If some dealers think that it is so hard and they hate it so much, why dont they quit? There is certainly more things to do in life than be a coin dealer. Perhaps it is just that trait of humans that most are not very happy with what they are doing. The grass always seems greener on the other side. And, since dealers are human too, I suppose it applies to them as well.
And what amazes some collectors, who would love to be a dealer, is that they want out. Collectors want in and the dealers want out. i guess that makes those collectors just as guilty as the dealers.
Why cant we all just be happy with what we do?

Dealer`:Ya You can check with Jay Rudo about it. If anyone would know,Jay would.`
Jay-Your a star....designation.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Looks like self actualization at its best !!!
Your love for what you do shows, as your stuff is top notch, your coin communication/ethics excellent, you are very flexible (to the favor of the collector, sometimes may be viewed as detrimental from your average dealer, but then again, you are not an average dealer), and your prices are very reasonable.
When I retire, I would like to be at least a part time dealer, one that caters to collectors versus just having an attitude of here is my stuff, give me your money.
Keep up the good work and I'll think of you when I wake up tomorrow morning at 5:15am, to deal with corporate America.

I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!
If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??
