OK How did this happen?

Just got my grades from the April CC special submission overall not a bad submission.....(submission # 8032759)

But I was very supprised that 2 of out of 3 Kellogg cards that I pulled straight out of unopened single card packs and put directly into Card saver I's came back as "Not holdered evidence of trimming".

This one really has me scratching my head.... Has this happened to anyone else? No they were not miscut ... and were almost perfectly centered... I expect this to happen from time to time with older cards but pack fresh cards? Anyone have any thoughts .....

    Jeff,

I get the impression that the "Not holdered evidence of trimming" has become a catch-all for any card outside of what PSA considers the acceptable size for a given issue. Is it possible that Kellogg's had more size variation in its process than PSA does? probably... But, I too have occasionally run across this issue with Topps cards that I'm sure were factory fresh, but 1/64 of an inch too small.

Luxury - I haven't had that happen to me, but some how it doesn't surprise me. The unopened singles can look pretty funky at times, but they're certainly not tampered with.

    LuxuryWines...

    Hey Jeff..

I recently had over 200 Kellogg's cards (76 and 77) returned to me unholdered because of "miscut". PSA graded some and returned some.

On your 73's...Look and see if the paper chads are still there. It would be impossible to have trimmed cards with the chads still in place.

Another way to check is, what position was the card at on the uncut panel sheet?

The 73's all came from 9 card sheets and the Ryan card was at position 8 (meaning the bottom/center card of a sheet that had 3 rows of 3) The Ryan card should shows chads on the top, right, and left edges only. The bottom edge would have a straight finish cut. The Palmer card was the same position on a different 9 card uncut sheet. Same deal, chads on the top, right, and left..Finish cut on the bottom.

Lmk if you would. I'm curious as to the nature of these returns. Also you said that you pulled these cards from single card packs. I assume you mean cereal box giveaways. LMK

  • I had 3 straight from the foil pack modern cards rejected the same way. I htink its a quesiton of minimum sizing, but they call it "evid. of trim."

  • King,

These cards did come from cereal packs.... I have not gotten the submission back when I do I will let you know if they have chads etc........

Also it really annoys me that if I am spending $10 per card that PSA can not take the time to properly identify why they will not grade them (ie did not meet minimum size) obviously these cards were not trimmed... Maybe I am just ranting but again if you are going to charge me the grading fee I would like a better explanation as to why my cards were not graded (ie Evidence of trimming left edge,,,) Also I never received an email that either my grades had been posted or that my cards had shipped ...

  • I would call my lawyer if I were you. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated. PSA needs to get it right the first time, everytime. This is a clear case of malpractice. I am more than confident that given the right jury, you would be awarded 7 figure compensation for your damages.

  • Just got some 71 Kellogg's back today. Two card came back "evidence of trim." This is the first time I have had this experience with any Kellogg's. These cards I've had since 1971, so I know there was no alteration to them. There is something in the manufacturing of some of these that apparently PSA doesn't like. The fact that it was the same player makes me wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the placement of the card on the sheet before it was cut.
Also, I had a Mays that had about a 1/2 inch crack and I decided to send it anyway just to see what they would do with it. Came back a PSA 6, which seems reasonable.
Also got a few 9s, which made me happy.
  • I picked up the submission over the weekend . And looked very carefully at the cards If these babies were trimmed I can not find it. They Measure 3.5 inches by 2.25 exactly (measuring from several different places... Anyone have any suggestions who I should contact at customer service ... Because I really think PSA made a mistake on these 2 cards...

  • Seems to be a lot of "trimmed" Kelloggs being mentioned on the board as of late. I suspect that they have recently discovered a new "tell" of a trimmed card for this manufacturer and have been applying it. It does however seem to cover some cards that have factory cuts as well.
This board would have a fit if even one trimmed card gets holdered and therefore many that deserve a nice grade don't make it in. That is the price that we pay. I suspect that you will not get them to discuss what goes on in the grading room regardless of who you call and talk too.
I have read here several times, if a card comes back, submit it again or maybe twice and it will find its way in somehow.
I have a nice 66 Topps FB that is too big and cannot be holdered. Maybe I should send it to a trim expert for "proper sizing". Obviously not tampered with but also not holdered. I would 10X the edges looking to see if you can pick up what they have.

  • Just wanted to put some closure on this one...

I had sent a PM to Charlie once I received these 2 cards back and measured them and looked them over and found no evidence of trimming. I explained to him the situationthat these cards were fresh from cereal packs and put immeadiately into CArd Saver I's by me. I also told him that these cards may have been rejected because they had no chads..(which is how this batch of single pack cards came to me...) .He asked me to send some of the other 73 K Cards I was submitting in the packs so their graders could look at them and to resubmit these 2 cards along with this submission...

Well the cards both came back PSA 9 today (as I had expected when submitting them originally... ). This is why I like PSA as a company.... They may not always get it right but they do their best to rectify problems quickly... Even for a small submitter like me...
