Am I being too paranoid?

I passed on this lot of cards because I feared they were trimmed cards. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Even if they are not trimmed, they look a little rough in condition. I don't think I see anything better than a PSA 5 there. It's a tough set, but I'd still shoot for better cards if you're interested in grading them. I'm sure you can buy nicer raw cards from the '62 set if you look around (I don't need to tell you that, though). If you're looking for a nice EX raw set, some of those cards will make the grade. Basically, some do look trimmed.

I wonder why you'd be interested in this lot of cards. From your posts on these boards, I know that you know what you are doing. Are you interested in lower grade cards from this set?

    Alan,
That's what 3rd-party authentication is all about. No, you're not being too paranoid at all. There's a very good chance that they are trimmed. If we (collectors) all knew each-other well enough, our words would be plenty to satisfy us. If Frank Smith tells me his 77 Stennett is MINT and unaltered, then it is...however, when a seller you don't know puts up a lot of cards like this it seems that any amount of money can be too much. A little snow but nice image quality on the Pinson, though.
  • I recently purchased a 62 card over eBay and was convinced it was trimmed as the lower edge on the rear looked like it had been recently cut. Anyway, I took the card to my local card shop and asked the guy what he thought. He looked at me and said, "why would anyone trim a $10 card?". As a result, I'm a little less paranoid now, but every once in a while, I'll break out the loupe. I'm thinking with the Powell and the LL card, there isn't that much upside on trimming the card. (The Powell does look trimmed in comparison to the LL card next to it). What a f@#$%d up, mixed up world we live in.
Call me crazy, but I collect 62 Topps BB.

The reason that I am considering some of these lots are that I have quite a few superstar ungraded cards in non investor grade...and at 50 cents to a dollar a card...I can fill in and possible complete my sets fairly inexpensively. It doesn't make economic sense to buy lower psa graded commons.

The 1962's pictured looked all over the map in terms of size. I have no idea why someone would trim a bunch of commons. To me, the league leader card looks noticably larger than the cards to the right and left. I have heard that the "presentation sets" were a fraction smaller in size.

some people might practice their trimming skills on commons...these cards are all over the map.

    did you ask the seller?

Trust me -- it happens. Whether for practice on better cards -- or simply turning a $1- VG/Ex common into an $5 NrMt. one that will move much more quickly -- there are definitely unscrupulous sellers out there who trim commons, even from the 1960s. I've purchased some in the past (site unseen from dealers I thought I could trust...), and no longer employ the services of said dealers.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Color me skeptical. unless I know the seller peronally, I avoid raw cards that I cannot put my hands and my ruler on.

Why would anyone glue their superstars into a book either for that matter? Cards that look like they have sharp corners yet have heavier than normal surface wear should always raise a red flag. I think you were wise to stay away.

I have had a number of vintage commons I bought for less than $10 come back trimmed. Who knows on these, but in my opinion you are crazy to spend much money on ungraded vintage cards.
