Looks like one of those coins you pay a "little" over sheet prices for!

  • Beautiful coin what about resale value? I seriously doubt if dealers on bourse floor will offer you more than $10. Am I the only sane person left.
  • That was my question. Sounds like big money for a mid-grade common Jeff, but I don't collect Jeff's. Am I wrong?

It has pretty colors but I can't see paying $200+ for a midgrade modern proof... but, hey, if you like it, enjoy it.

Damn straight! How dare he pay more money for a coin than you think it's worth just because he likes it. Shame on him!

Agreed.... Many people always have to worry (mainly degrade) what someone else pays for something they want. I could see if the buyer was asking "should I pay this much" and asking for help. Not the case here, buyer seems happy and I say congrats and enjoy.

It is an awesome looking coin. I'm not familar with the prices for this series, although it seems to be a bit much. On the other hand sometimes you have to pay extra to get an awesome coin. I have an MS 65 PCGS 1960 Franklin with beautiful (obverse) end roll toning, and I paid stupid money for it. I had the coin reholder by PCGS, and while it was there I had them photograph it. I'll post a scan of the picture if someone can tell me how I can paste it with the text.

While we are talking about Franklins, my set is "The Woodbury Collection". It is currently #40. I am currently in the process of obtaining a 49-D 65 FBL, and may have it the within the next few days.

you'd pay $10 for a nickel? most of my friends sure wouldn't call you sane.

  • On second thought I should have put it in a nicer way than I did. I guess if you like the coin maybe it's worth it. Hope no hard feelings.

There were 20 bids on it. So, somebody sure wanted it. I think it looks like a piece of art. It's a one of a kind.

Well, there were indeed 20 bids but they from "only" 10 different bidders. What was impressive was that 4 of them were willing to pay over $150 for this coin. Now, I've paid many multiples over bid for gem toned Morgans, but never 200 times. I guess that's partly the case because you don't find gem untoned Morgans available for about one dollar as you do Jefferson Nickels.

Whether this coin is really worth 200 times bid depends on more than whether the buyer really likes it. The question is, how many are there with this kind of eye appeal? Ordinarily, you wouldn't think there would be too many. But, lately I've seen literally rolls of them, although that hasn't seemed to satisfy the demand. To be fair, this particular coin was decidedly different from those other deeply toned pieces, and possessed more colors. Overall, I'd venture to say that the new owner has a very nice eye for beautiful coins, and might be surprised at how well he'll do on resale in the right venue.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been away from the house due to fumigation of termites.

Anyway, I was not surprised this coin went for so much money. Pretty toned nickels in the normal colors of purple and blue, are pretty hard to come by and sure are pretty...but when it has the colors that this nickel has, it is truly an oddity. As a PR66 this is a joke, it looks like a 68 easily, I have found that PCGS really hesitates putting 67+ grades on modern toned coins. I am not sure why.

Anyway, I think rd5425 will be pleasantly surprised when he gets the coin, as the picture did not show the entirety of the coloring on the coin. For some reason proof nickel mirrors really don't show the colors well, I guess the color is sort of blackened out by the depth of the mirrors. Who knows, but as a dealer, I should would pay multiples times the $10 someone suggested. Actually I did.

What I would be curious to know is.. the price tag on the reverse going from $500 to $300 and then selling for low $200's?

Was that a sublimal advertisment to make people pay more for the coin? Why even show the price tag? ITS AN AUCTION, not a store.

i must say an extremely eye appealling coin

    and if better in person
    which i bet it is

this coin i would not be able to take my eyes off of

as to value the market has spoken
but from what some have said on here others were willing to pay close to the final winners bid
and i bet if offered to one of the underbidders currently they would pay 250

    sincerely michael
