OK, so maybe we're not totally relevant here, but he did put a "Darkside" warning in the title.

In 1898, peso coinage began but with retention of the enormously popular Cap-and-Rays design. Modifications included putting the date on the reverse, indicating the fineness as 902.7, and designating it as Un Peso. The edge was modernized to be milled, but the diameter remained the same as the popular 8 Reales. Consequently, the coinage was immediately accepted in the Far East and continued the tradition of Mexican crowns being a premier international trade coin. This status was recognized when Mexico City produced some of this issue in 1908 and 1909 indicating "Republica Mexicana" several years after the birth of the United States of Mexico. In 1949, the Nationalist Chinese government in Taipei ordered 8.25 million of this type of peso, back dated to 1898 for local use after it separated from mainland China. Those pieces were officially restruck in the Denver, Colorado Mint.
