This is strictly conjecture, but, to give you all an idea of what goes on ....
If I am not mistaken, that coin was originally MS64, and was mercilessly worked over by a crackout guy until it got into an NGC MS65 holder. I overheard a conversation in the hallway outside a Stack's auction last year regarding a '26-S, and how someone bought it for $22K and was trying to get $75K for it, after having the top doctors look at it and getting it into a 65 holder etc etc and I suspect it was the same coin. Well, I hope it was worthy of the MS65 grade. Of course this had nothing to do with David Lawrence, which I hold in high esteem. This was all done at the crackout/insider level first ...
