I've got a 1880 IHC brown proof........ Lovely reds and purples........ but a cuppla carbon spots in the obverse fields between the headdress feathers....... Anyone have an idea as to whether NCS can help? or best leave it alone????

don't be so paranoid about a couple of carbon spots. does something have to be absolutely perfect for you to enjoy it? the presence of carbon indicates the coin is original - LEAVE IT ALONE

enjoy the coin for what it is

Agreed - leave the coin alone!!!! The carbon spots simply give the coin character - let it have some character!

Also, true carbon spots are a part of the metal and cannot be removed w/o permanently damaging the coin...

I agree with the comments above. If the "spots" aren't a major distraction, or harming the coin, I would leave them alone.

My 92 S barber half in 66 has a big carbon spot sticking out above the left stalk on the reverse, it looks like you could flick this off, but i'm glad nobody tried.

If "preserving" or "conserving" [don't you love those terms!!!] has a valid reason to exist, it's to remove pvc or to dip a holy unnacceptable dark ugly coin. Not to dip out, or somehow [help] a very pretty coin with a few small spots.
