Postal Scare....thought my coin was gone forever!

On Saturday, March 22 I mailed a number of coins to different parts of the country. One was a high dollar toned commemorative that I was sending to the west coast for yesterday's Trade and Grade event. I'd mailed it registered and insured for $20,000. The others were all mailed insured for the minimum required to get a signature on the other end...basically, self-insured.

My buddy started contacting me late last week saying the coin hadn't arrived. We talked by e-mail every day including yesterday and the piece still wasn't there.

The local branch was aware of my concern and was also doing everything they could to locate the package. Yesterday, the Post Master pulls me aside and says he can't find any evidence that the package ever left his facility. I told him I doubted seriously the guy who took the package from me had stolen it.....he's a little sloppy with his paperwork sometimes...but I didn't think he was a thief.

This morning the Post Master phones and says he's starting a criminal investigation.

This afternoon, my buddy writes and says the coin finally arrived!

A happy ending for all....I hope.

Bryan, I bought a coin last December. The seller mailed it on Dec 16. It showed up here last Saturday. The Post Office works in mysterious ways.

Never-the-less, I would find it disconcerting that your local P.O. branch has no proof of your Registered Mail leaving that station.

Any info on the Morgans that you sent to me?

And, congrats on finding your coin.

    Michael,

Your package has been 'forwarded' according to postal records so it appears it went to your old office but has been redirected to the new one. You should have it in a day or two.

  • I worked as a postal window clerk for 15 years. The item would of been logged in at the local P.O. and at every stop to the destination. Very strange it would of not been logged out from that post office at he next mail dispatch.

    abmluce,

The Post Master showed me what should have been the page filled out in a book they have for registered packages. Since it was a Saturday, and a small post office, I'm sure mine was the only registered package for that day.

He claims the registered packages are placed in a red bag which is then tag-sealed. The next guy that breaks the seal has to sign a form....and so on. But he claimed that the package was not in the bag when it was next opened!!! That therefore led him to believe it never left his shop.

I don't know what happened....other than it somehow made its way to California.

I mailed something registered on Saturday for submissions - small post office - main person and relief person (who always has to look things up, because can't remember from 1 time to the next).

I checked the numbers on USPS website a few days later - said attempted delivery at my post office on the day I sent it. It showed up where it was supposed to go a few days later.

The USPS has an internal system for registered mail that they can follow if needed - it is supposed to be under lock and key and signed at each step.

I realize it is no consolation but if you had the receipt and insured for $20 K you could have gotten some money back.
