Gurnee Coin Show Finds - Help Please

Found a couple of goodies at the coin show in Gurnee. Would like some grade help. I want to see if I am getting any better at it.

First is a 1882-s Morgan/ Very frosty - Rainbow on top - see very few marks. My grade MS64/65 possible PL?

Lori - the 82S looks nice and could very well make MS64 - can't speak to the PL off the picture but it's got nice color.

The '26 is hard to tell - something about it tells me that it might be lightly circulated, but that could also be a weak strike. Dunno on that one.

Nice set of war nickles! image

Wow, I love the Peace Dollar and the Jefferson Nickel!! They're spectacular colors.
I also love the Morgan Dollar. Can't beat a frosty Morgan!

    Great buys!

Come on guys and gals. No one else has any opinions or help with these?

    Thanks.

  • Sorry I can't be of any help. I only like to try grade help with coins that I am familiar with...............Ken
  • I was there today. I picked up a couple items for a nice change.
I haven't found much of personal interest in 2-3 months at local shows.

I would guess the Morgan to be 63, but definately PL. I can't grade Peace Dollars in person, let alone from a scan. Nice nickels.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • Lori,

DISCLAIMER: GRADING FROM SCANS IS HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED. LORUM IPSUM. E PLURIBUS UNUM. LOS TRES CABALLEROS. BOILERPLATE BOILERPLATE... FITNESS FOR A GIVEN PURPOSE, ETC. ETC.

image Whew, now that that's out of the way.

The Peace is a nice dollar. I don't think it will make MS, though. That year is notorious for weak strike (especially the reverse in the top lettering). But, and however, there looks like good honest wear on the eagle's beak, wing, and head - and on Liberty's hair and cheek. I'd love to hold it in my hand for more insight. It looks AU50-AU55 to me. I love the coin. It is honest, nice looking, and may have had a very gentle cleaning a long time ago.

Just my two centavos... please understand that I've not held it in my hand before I made this comment.
  • I bought the coin for the beautiful toning (peace). I am learning on the grading by you could be right. The dealer had MS62 on the slab (not that it means anything).

    I just appreciate the opinion.

    Thanks.

    Lori
  • Lori,

You bought it for all the right reasons. More power to purchases like that!

    I like the toning, too.

If the Morgan has a full complement of luster, it is an MS65, the Peace Dollar is an AU coin, and the nickels are friggin' beautiful!image

  • Yep, the Morgan and a couple of those Nickles are going on there way to PCGS tomorrow. Not going to do those ones to ANACS.

Think there is a chance PCGS will BB the Jeffersons? I was tempted to pop out the ones I dont want graded and leave the rest so they would know how they toned.

  • Lori,

Ursabear's got it right. You bought for the right reasons.

Those war nickels look to be SUPERB. Unfortunately, on the 82-S, I would say that there's an awful lot of chatter on the cheek and in the field in front of Liberty's face. Looks to be a fairly heavy hit directly below the "P" in Pluribus. All these areas being prime focal points, I'd have to say 63, at best.

However...I know that imaging tends to exagerate flaws a lot of times.

That Morgan has fewer marks than the MS65 1880-S I just got back from PCGS:

    Very large obverse image here.

BTW, when I submitted it, I had the above going MS63, (which was just a WAG since I don't know diddly about Morgans).

  • That's because they like you, Russ. image I guess I'll have to photograph an 1896 with a whole lot fewer marks that I just got back in a PCGS-63 slab.

    TD,

If they liked me, they wouldn't have body-bagged three of the other coins on that submission. Hey, now that I think about it, maybe they were feeling guilty and gave me a little compensatory gift.image

TWODOGS I agree ms63 is the grade I would expect on that morgan. It is a very nice looking coin. mike

  • They all looked at each other and one said, "Let's throw that Kennedy freak a bone." Is that what you're saying?

Yeah, that would be it.. Actually, they were probably shocked out of their shorts when a submission came in from me that had other coins besides Accented Hair Kennedys.image

82-s probably would go MS64 with a shot at PL. The 26-S may not go MS60. That coin is tought to call basec on the picture/scan.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

OK, heres what i think on the Morgan.

Solid 63+,with the frost and nice strike maybe 64.It seem to me that i can see to many flow lines in the field to be slabbed PL.Just my thoughts.

I have seen 65's with alota marks,as Russ pointed out.I also have 63's with less marks.
    NUMO
  • 82-S Morgan looks MS63 from in the image but may well be a 64 depending on the angle of the picture and the lighting. Either way it looks like too many contacts for MS65.

Peace Dollar looks slightly worn in several points on the reverse. This may be due to the lighting and camera angle though
