BOWERS AND MERENA ON THE MOVE
(Wolfeboro, NH) - To improve its operations and take advantage
of existing numismatic and marketing resources in Louisiana
and California, Bowers and Merena (www.BowersandMerena.com)
will move many its operations out of New Hampshire by mid-
May. Some retail operations will remain in New Hampshire.
The company is a division of Collectors Universe, Inc., based
in Santa Ana, California.
"Our numismatic customers will benefit because we will be able
to improve our service level and reduce response time while
moving our consignment deadlines closer to the auction dates.
With our upcoming sales at the Mid-America Coin Convention
near Chicago in June, and as the official auctioneer for the
American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money in
Baltimore in July, we will be able to increase our capability
to produce an even higher quality catalog," said Paul
Montgomery, President of Bowers and Merena.
Montgomery is the former President and Chief Executive Officer
of Jefferson Coin & Bullion in Louisiana. He became President
of Bowers and Merena in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire in mid- January after
founder, Q. David Bowers, personally notified
the Collectors Universe Board of Directors in early December
that he would resign.
"Long-time staff member and Senior Numismatist, Mark
Borckardt, and other Bowers and Merena staff members will
continue to oversee numismatic sales, auctions and the writing
of catalogs at the new location in New Orleans. The print
production of the catalogs and our marketing and advertising
services will be coordinated through our parent company,
Collectors Universe in California, because of the tremendous
numismatic print and advertising resources available there,"
explained Montgomery.
"We are in the process of making relocation plans with a
number of Bowers and Merena staff members. I asked the staff
if they'd give up snow-filled winters, and many agreed, said
Montgomery."
Mail and phone calls will continue to be received at the
Wolfeboro location: P.O. Box 1224, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

In memory of BL, SM, and KG. 16 and forever young, rest in peace.
That's an odd comment for someone living so close to the Meadowlands!

Ok - it's a deal. No world headquarters move in return for continued stalking. Watch out tho - your k@cker spaniel aint the meanest b**** around! Now if you had a k@cker squirrel........
For the life of me, I cannot see any reason for B/M to be in N.O. They should move to NB and be done with it. I don't know how Mark and John will be able to carry the cataloging load, but they are both excellent numismatists and catalogers. I wish them the best of luck in carrying on the CU venture.
IMHO, CU should cut their losses and sell the company to QDB, if he wants it. He is the only one that can continue the "Bowers" tradition.
Continuing a B/M name is meaningless without QDB, in NH or anywhere.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I always thought the Swamp Thing had the hots for Adrieane Barbeau?
Let's see how future catalogues look.
I hope Q. David opens up a new auction firm though. His little black book of significant rarities should not go to waste.

These are timeshare exchanges and are not reservations that can be easily changed.
Besides I don't like taking summer vacations in Louisiana.
B&M should have relocated to the Phiadelphia, PA area. That would have made the most sense.
<< <i>I hope Q. David opens up a new auction firm though. His little black book of significant rarities should not go to waste. >>
From what I have heard he already has.
Just to let you know, John isn't with B and M anymore. He resigned a week or two ago...Nothing really left but Mark and Al Pinkall in sales...
<< <i>So QDB did resign himself, not fired? >>
The press release is misleading. Bowers was fired as President of B&M but resigned from the board of Directors of CU after his firing from B&M.
Sounds like they are moving at least part of their auction dept to CA. Everyone get ready to start paying CA 8% sales tax on their auction purchases.
Though I suspect, if you send an email to Donn Pearlman (donnpr@aol.com), he will add you to his email list - he does publicity for various coin related concerns now and again.

Isn't that just California residents (which excludes me)?
