Thoughts on the long-term effect of using Air-tite holders?
I have often admired the look that the airtites with the volara inserts can give a set of coins. But while I'm 90% sure that coins stored in them are probably fine, and 100% sure that well-circulated pieces would be OK, I just don't know that much about volara, the stuff the rings are made of.
In looking about on the internet, I see that Volara is a polyethelene type compound, and it is used archivally for other things (papers), so that certainly seems good. I guess I just keep waiting for Susan Maltby (the conservator and Con World columnist whose opinions I respect) to do a column on using them, but as of yet I've never seen her mention them.
Just wondering then, if any of the board are conservators themselves, or can vouch for personal experiences about the stability of volara placed next to metal. For my part, I've used airtites occasionally and have not noticed anything wrong, but the usage I've employed so far is hardly long-term (a year or two.)
