My PCGS Submissions -- Ugh

Got e-mail notice of my submissions. This was my gold club "freebie" which I submitted at Long Beach. Thought I'd share them with you:

1 90079039 1882-CC S$1 PVC
2 90079040 1910-S $5 XF45
3 90079041 1805 50C Cleaning
4 90079042 1964 1C PR67RD

I paid XF money for the $5, so no problems there. The 1c was in my collection for many years and always stuck out as being a very nice piece. I just had to see how it would grade.

The 1805 50c should have been VF-something. It looked like it was cleaned a long time ago, but I figured it had a shot. I thought hard about this one, but now, I'm actually kind of glad its fate after 198 will not include the plastic tomb. Besides, I like reading the lettered edge on the early halves.

I can't even tell the PVC on the 1882-CC and I don't care. No more raw Morgans for me period. Too much whizzed, cleaned, PVC, AT junk out there. Fortunately this didn't set me back a whole lot.

Sure these were "free" submissions, but stuff like this really discourages me from spending a lot more money on coins. I'll just stick to completing circulated sets of Walking 50c, Buffalo nickels, and so on. Besides, with the way things are going with my girlfriend I probably should start saving for an engagement ring.

I think they're hard on the freebie submissions for some reason. Perhaps to submit the coins again, to regain their costs?

on my free submissions I made two pr68DCAM Frankies.... I disagree that they are harder on them, just gotta send in killer coins...

I even doubt the graders know that they are free submissions...

you should be able to clean the PVC from the S$ if it hasn't eaten into the metal. a simple bath with acetone. as far as the other coins and the assigned grades, when you get them back look them over to see what you may have missed or where you may have erred in your grading. i always look at my dissappointing submissions with an open mind and put them in my "learning set" with the hopes of making better choices next time. it's worked for me.

good luck and i hope you don't give up. i firmly believe some of the best coins are raw gems waiting to be found!!

Keets, thanks for the tips.

Yeah, I try to keep things in a positive light. This was another learning experience for me, and I still enjoy collecting. It would be silly for me to leave the hobby just with this one experience. The good experiences and surprises have far outweighed the bad.

I have to agree with Keets. There are A LOT of coins out there that are raw for now, but belong in a slab. Cheap too. You will develop an eye for the gems. But even then, you will STILL find that the graders will disagree with you on occasion. I had 1 coin go one grade below my expectations, 2 go one grade above, and 1 come back in a bodybag for tooling. I STILL can't for the life of me see any tooling.

It's always a gamble, but less of one as you gain experience.
