Nice pic Bailey - this specimen shows the same "teeth" marks, just didn't come out very clearly on the pic.

Its a very interesting variety. One that PCGS doesn`t recognize.Or atleast refuses to designate on the insert.
Maybe that was past policy and they are gearing up to attribute it?Not that I am on a mission to
have PCGS label them as such.Just pointing out PCGS doesnt do the bugs bunny Frankie,,,I think...

Anyway,I,d like to know how this variety came to be.An accidental mishandleing of the die resulting in damage
to that area of the die?Or a playful ,possibly vindictive, mint employee messin around on the job?

Any one know the history behind the creation of this `55 Frankie?

    Thanks.

Breen attributes Ben's sharp teeth to either a die clash and/or chips in the die.

I personally think it was just a prank by a mint employee.

No hanky panky from the Mint or anything like that...The marks were caused by simple die clashing. This was illustrated in Whitmans Numismatic Journal where the eagle on the reverse was superimposed over Frankies face on the obverse. The eagles very outer wing feathers (left side of eagle) which slant down do match up nicely with the front of Franklins mouth. Or you can grab a Frankie and check the measurement yourself.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
  • I agree with Gemini - it's a simple case of die clashing - no overzealous mint employees trying to pay homage to "Plan 9 from Outer Space" or anything like that image
