Don't believe everything you see in a price guide. image However, the MS version is the one (and only) modern commemorative that is actually hard to find in high grades.

I'm not current on pricing but I think any coin that has a shot at MS67 or higher is worth submitting.

The prices in 68 and 69 are within reason. The 66 and 67 look high to me too. John Rothans asked me to pass along any instances where the guide may be off so they look into and fix it if appropriate. I'll give him a heads up on this one and we'll see what happens.

FYI, the price guide has been corrected and the revised numbers will show up tomorrow.

As stated and as I have learned from others,. This is a very tough coin in 68 or higher. My experience with them since that has proven the uncs to be very elusive in 68+

The first PCGS MS 69 was made about a year and a half ago I believe. It auctioned on TT for around $5000. I've been checking everyone of these I've seen since and the best I've found all made 67s. The $5000 sale apparently caused a lot of people to start looking as the pops did move up and the price down to compensate but these coins are easily $1300 to $1900 coins still.

For sale ... but not sold.

On eBay, PCGS 69s go for about $700-$800, 68s for about $80-$100.

Note that the usual conventional wisdom about grading services is a little whacked for the 82-D. ANACS is the toughest (with a population of *0* in MS69), then PCGS, then ICG, and then NGC. NGC is grossly loose on the 82-D -- I wouldn't pay 68 money for an NGC 69.

And then there's the company that shall remain nameless -- which would you rather buy: This one? or This one?.

flaminio, I wouldn't read too much into the ANACS population reports, I've seen the same scarcity in other modern series. I believe that's mostly not due to having stricter standards, but simply because they get fewer submissions, particularly in the high grades. If you had an MS69 (PCGS standards) coin, you'd be crazy to send it to ANACS as far as resale value.

If you looked at various grades on a percentage basis you might get closer to a true picture, but your first-hand experience is probably a better guide.

Really the only sure way would be to send the same group of coins to each service -- about 10 times each. image

completely disagree w/ the premise of the responses, as i perceive them. this coin is laughably common up through ms-67, probably higher. so common in fact that i just don't think most folks would bother to submit 'em. i don't know if i've ever seen 1 that would grade LOWER than ms-66!

i literally would not pay more than five bucks for ms-67+, no way no how. & i actually like the coin!

Heh -- true. I don't have the resources to do a group 10 times, but I've been passing one coin around:

    http://www.flaminio.com/temp/pci2icg2pcgs.htm

I haven't yet sent this one to ANACS, but I have sent a fair number over there, and the best I could squeeze out of them was a 68. Actually, what I think I'd like to do with this one is send it to NCS and see if they can clean, er, curate the spots off, and then put it in an NGC holder. (For those out there screaming about why would anyone do this with a five dollar coin, take a chill pill. It's just an experiment -- all in the name of science and all that.)

(If anyone is preparing a shipment to NCS and wouldn't mind me piggybacking on their order, private me and I'll send the coin over to you.)

dorkkarl -- yes, this coin is laughably common up to 67. At 68, however, they get exceedingly scarce (except in NGC holders), and at 69 they are downright rare. However, the premium paid for a PCGS 69 is ridiculous. I'm searching for that nonexistent ANACS 69, but I don't expect to pay more than $500 for it. (And yes, even that is ridiculous. We all have our coin fetishes image ).

flaminio, hey that's cool! You might try ANACS before you curate away the spots, they make a nice identifying mark. image

I'd love to see somebody do the same thing on a larger scale. With all the effort that's been spent debating the different services, it'd be a relatively cheap experiment.

Sold my 1982 D "en gee cee " MS69 for $300 over the weekend; a PCGS 69 is on ebay for $710.
image I actually like the proof version better and it's a fraction of the price.

Yes, indeed. This is the kind of reporting I would expect from our magazines, or even the ANA. Take 30 representative coins, and send them anonymously around to each of the several major grading services. Report the results, and repeat the process on a regular basis. Instead of a bunch of loudmouths saying "XYZ is loose" or "ABC is tight", we'd have some hard evidence.

Of course, with the ANA in bed with NGC these days, and the loss of potential advertising for the magazines, I don't see this happening anytime soon.
