The photos of the nickels are a little dark. I can't take any photos of blue or purple nickels that turn out right. The morgan looks great and those nickles have some cool colors.

i am using a Olympus Camedia C-3000, it has a digital zoom and macro mode. It is a 3.3 megapixel camera and it is set on 1600x2148 resolution right now. I am using the "dome"setup that the guy sells at the big shows with the optic fiber lights.

still a little tweaking but she is coming along nicely.

The Morgan looks fine to me. Pretty good actually. You picked up the nack on the colors of the nickels. Maybe brighten up a little ( maybe more lighting? ) and a little more tweaking on the focus ( not that bad really ). All-in-all I do like them.

JB - Thanks for the pics. I was at Baltimore yesterday and spoke with Larry of FiberOptics for an hour. What a nice guy. He demonstrated the dome setup with 2 fiber optic lights for me, with a proof seated quarter of mine with irredescent toning. He could not get the toning to come out of the coin. Any tips you can share - where do you place the lights? do you use a black shield for proofs? any special camera settings for toned proofs? He strongly suggested the Nikon 4500. I would love to get pictures to come out like yours. Bought the dome and thinking of the fiber optic set-up as well.

I was setting the coins flat on the table but have found that picking them up and rotating them to find the sweet spot helps to get the colors. white coins are easy, you can just lay them flat. the lights can be placed at about 10:00 and low down at 2:00. I have found that the lights can be pretty much set at one place if you are going to hold the coin in your hand and rotate. I have been trying to find something that would hold raw coins for me so I don't have to touch them. Maybe some king of rigging job from the hardware store somehow.......

I have used a white background (piece of paper) and this seems to work the best for most coins as even with the fiber optics it seems the light is just not enough. I have been playing with the white balance and some other control on my camera (Olympus Camedia c-3000) and they are coming out better.

Very light toning is almost impossible to get with this setup. When I can master this then it will be a great setup. right now it is 75% there. I will try and borrow someone elses digital camera to see if the camera can compensate for the few shortcomings of the domeand lighting. I have not really tried to use lighting other than the fiber optics so if you already have the dome and a good camera I would suggest the fiber optics too.

I also have a C-3000 but never tried the dome. I also use an additional Macro lens with it. I use 3 lights: (2) reveal 40 watt bulbs and (1) OTT lite. With the OTT Lite I usually set the white balance to the SUN icon and get pretty good results.
