I been collecting since around 1992, and have saved just about everything I've ever got.
I'm just the type of buyer if I see something I like, I'll buy it. But I do like collecting
all the big names. I used to like to be able to put sets together, but there is just too
much product on the market to work on them all.

  • Bobstar....just curious about Ripken.....if he didn't have that iron man streak and missed games here and there (like any MLB player) would he be considered a "Great" player? Would his numbers be good enough to get into the Hall without the streak? Just wondering about him, I honestly never was the biggest Ripken fan.....

  • Ripken is not one of the greatest to play the game.
  • heh, I got into a debate with people on Beckett about this. Considering he played 21 seasons, he has no standout stats other than being healthy and popular.

In 21 seasons (3001 games, 11551 at-bats), he hit .276 BA, 431 HRs (average of 20.5/season), 44 triples, 602 doubles, 1695 RBIs, 1129 walks, 1305 strikeouts, 3184 hits, 1647 runs, 34% on base percentage, 36 stolen bases, caught stealing 39 times and only 2 gold gloves in 21 seasons. Other than being healthy, he has average if best stats for 21 seasons. Statistically, there is nothing that standouts to be a great over 21 seasons.
  • See that's what I think about Ripken. He's a good player that showed up to work for over 20 years. Will I get into the HOF if I showed up everyday to my job for the next 20 years? There are people that have done that in the workforce and never really get recognized. Here's a guy who people think is one of the greatest ever and he just has average stats. There's guys who have put up way better numbers but don't get the "Ripken" treatment.

I think this needs to be a thread discussed on it's own....

These people do not sit at their desk in front of millions of television viewers, adoring in-park fans, or the national media. It is obvious why a person like Ripken would be recognized more than someone else for doing technically the same things--showing up to work everyday for 20 years.

He also get's paid a ton of money for what he is doing. I believe what he did is great but his numbers are not good enough to be considered one of the best. I believe the game he broke the record was voted one of the greatest moments in baseball and I think there alot more moments better than that in all the years of baseball.

Just like I told the guy on Beckett. You may get an award for perfect attendance in high school, but if you graduate with a C- average, you still won't get into Harvard.
