Master Player Sets

The Jim Palmer player set was just split into Master/Basic. My % complete on the master set just fell from 90 something% to 70 something% image

The updated master set only inlcudes a handful of OPC cards. Should I:
A) request that all the OPC cards be added (there are 20 which are not in the set currently) including those which haven't been graded yet
B) request the ones which have already been graded be added
C) only request the ones which I already own be added image

Looking for:

  • Robert- I'm having the same problem with teh Johnny Bench Master Set. What I've decided to do is only request those cards which have at present been graded by PSA be included. Of course this will exclude several cards, but I didn't see the sense in including a card (and ruining my %) that hadn't even been graded yet.

    Guys:

Only include cards that have been graded. As additional examples get graded, just let BJ and Gayle know about it. I have had this issue with the Mike Schmidt Master set, and Gayle and BJ are able to add additional examples every month or two. I only try to bother them when I have a couple of examples to add.

The Schmidt Master set may eventually double in size!!! (horror the thought). There's no need to make it too complex yet, especially if PSA has not graded the cards yet. I currently own about 20-25 examples of cards that are in queue for the next Schmidt update. I think this method makes the most sense -- and at least in the interim, it makes you feel good about the breadth of your collection....

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I am not in favor of the master/basic split...
I like the "player" sets best... some of the master sets are a little too involved and the basics sets are too skinny... player sets seem to be right on!
I think adding a master set is in order for the really enthusiastic collectors...
Right now, I have almost 5 complete player / basic / master sets to add in vintage basketball... but there just aren't enough fingers available at psa...

I agree. The Pete Rose Master set is a little too involved but I am dealing with it. One thing I know is this, BJ and Gayle are very responsive when an add request comes in. As long as I requsted graded cards, they were added.

Sometimes the Master set is a little much. The Schmidt set became way too much, so I am holding off on it for the time being. Marc, I see you point on how that could double ... I have another card you may be interested in by the way. For the Pete Rose Master set, the issues include but not limited to the 78 Sports Deck (same card with different backs, as this is really a deck of cards with Pete on the front), Kahn's issues (important cards nonetheless) with only a few even graded by PSA, the various discs, then there is the whole Tiffany debate, ete etc etc .... still fun, and that is what it really is all about.

Just remember, once you finally add that Snausages Dog Treats Limited Edition PSA 9, it is just one less card you need!

  • i agree, i think basic sets are much better. master sets are pretty much infeasible. for newer players, master sets would include so many run of the mill 50 cent base cards that arent worth grading that itd be a waste of time and money. same with retired master sets- i dont mind putting a set of every regular issue card of a given player during his career, but the newer Legend/greats cards arent even worth my time. not to mention the 400 bat/jersey/base etc cards that every player seems to have nowadays.

Collecting ever card out there of a player is a big enough challenge as it is, but to get all of em graded? please

The Master Sets do drive the prices up .....

    WOW!

  • I like the Basic/Master set split because although most collectors may never complete the master sets, they can at least show off some of the oddball cards they have aquired. The basic sets exist because it is so hard to complete a player run that includes all oddball and regional cards. Also I think a lot of collectors don't have an interest in the oddball and regional cards and consider their player runs complete with just the regular issue cards. Some collectors only collect the regular issue cards, while others try to collect every card of a player. The Basic/Master set split is an attempt to represent the goals of the different player collectors. Although I agree the Basic sets are a little skinny, I think the two sets do a good job of representing the goals of different collectors witch I think PSA should try its best to make the registry do.
  • I understand the issues and complaints about the cars that are included in the Master and Basic sets. My discussions with BJ and Gayle reflect that PSA is unwilling to add any card to the Master set list until such time as that card has actually been graded by PSA. Meaning if no card from that year set has been graded, it can't be on the list. Which explains why they say that the Master card lists are works in progress and subject to change.

So I wonder what they would do with say a 1998 Bowman Chrome Golden Anniversary Refractor Barry Bonds that is serial numbered to 5. If somebody grades one, would they add it to the set knowing that it's only possible for 5 of the participants to obtain it?

That is the case. Barry Bonds has to be a tough Master set. I have not looked at it, but he has to have over 500 PSA gradeable issues involved. I am not familiar at all with modern, so I may be wrong.

  • You are correct, if someone grades one, then it goes into the Master set (provided they ask PSA to add it to the Master set). Potentially it creates a nightmare for the set collectors, who need to constantly track the additions to the set. I'm thinking there are more like 1,000 current cardes that could be added to the Bonds Master Set (and its growing every day, year at an astounding rate).

I'm not sure about that, but I had a masterpiece in my suggested Marcus Allen master set, and they didn't include it.
