Would you classify this as an error?

I got this from my grandfather, just because I thought it was kind of interesting. Has anyone seen one of these before? Is it an error, or just plain funny looking. It's a 1943-S, nothing special, just would like some comments on it. Thanks.

It's only an error if you paid more than twenty cents for it.

put that in a PCGS slab and braddick would pay more than 20c for it if he needs that one!

the wear sure threw me off. I've never seen one worn that much.

Where is Braddick? There's a 1939 ANACS 15 Jeff up on Teletrade for $3 ...

It's not worn nor an error. It has been sanded or filed down. If it had THAT much wear the rev lettering would be worn away too.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I am not saying I disagree with any of you, because from the pictures it does look like a worn coin. But there are not any scratches or hairlines on this coin. The face surface is higher than the rest of the coin. Is there a explanation for this? I wish I could take pictures like some of you can take to better show you.

Hey those pics arent bad at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are better than most ebay pictures anyday!
  • Is this a contest to see who has the wornest war nick? Could be an interesting contest. It's always possible that this is a mint error of some kind. I only say that because no matter how worn a Jeff gets, you can always read the peripheral lettering, unlike a lot of other issues. You never know. I'm sure an error expert or two will chime in here shortly.

Lets make this interesting: any PCGS AG03 War Nickel I'll pay $50.
    If it's a PCGS FA02 I'll go $75.00.

    If it's a PO01 I'll up it to $150.00.

I have to agree with Dog97, if it was that worn than the letters would be worn as well. Looks like the coin was deliberately defaced.

Looks like it was ground down for jewelry, a belt buckle, key chain - something. It's definately not a mint error.

  • But why can't I see any scratches or hairlines? Would a long dip do something like this?

Probably because the coin was buffed or dipped in stronger acid than "normal" coin dip. Dunno...all I do know is that it's not a mint error, thus isn't worth over melt for what little silver there is in it.

Gotta be altered! The mint mark is way too good for the rest of the wear.image

    Edited to fix image.
  • Ed,
I thought that I had one, but I can't beat yours. Koodos for that "choice" specimen. A nice no steps (and no Monticello either) piece.
