My first time here, anybody collect pre-1933 gold?

Somebody suggested to come over to this forum to discuss coins in the series I like which is classic US gold. Anybody collect these on this forum? Here's one of my favorites. mike imageimage

  • i came here thinking you'd be talking about the classic head types (not coronet's & indian's) oh well.
if anyone around collects classic gold (1834-1838) i'd like to talk.

    take care,

Larry, thats a nice CC coin. I only have one CC gold coin and thats a $10 1891.
OneYearTypes, sorry- you are right I probably should have titled this early US gold- no I don't think that would have worked either. Pre 1933 gold coins should have been my choice-I will change it now. mike

boiler78, I am starting to think you own all the top notch gold coins or at least most of them!image mike

But then, the people at philly had plenty of practice so most of the classics came out with near perfection, looks like a 63 to me. I believe this to be one of the nicest sets to complete as there are very few different coins and varieties so once assembled you'd be able to line them all up in front of you and admire them as a whole. And also, with the low mintages of them you can consider each one of the a key date (except the 1836 quarter & half and the plain 1834 half).
It's incredible, the differences in strikes between the philly & the branch mints.

    5. Mike,

Thanks, I guess I should have posted a classic date but it would have been the same as Boilers' 1835! lol!

I don't have many of the bracnch mint gold coins but boy! If I have cash in my pocket and I see a Carson City, well, lets just say its not a pretty site! imageimage

    8. Do you remember seeing my 'guess the grade' of my branch mint half eagle? 1838-C i still haven't gotten an account where you can see the pictures directly from this site, but soon i will, i hope.

      Let's see if this works:
      1838-C Obverse
      1838-C Reverse

      Another trial:

Notice how the strike is so weak that on one wing some of the feathers are completely separate of the wing....

    9. Mike,

I have very few. Just some Indian Head $2.50 pieces from 1912 - 1925. Oh, and a 1891 CC $10 gold piece. Not much more than that!

      Mike,

Finished of the indian quarter eagles and I am now pursuing the half eagles. Both great series in my opinion and the only ones that are incuse design. Currently working on a type set too. Are you focusing on are specific area?
