What's with all of this "ebay price" aversion?

It seems like some people (you know who you are image ) have issues with others who say when making an offer to buy or sell a card "that's what it goes for on Ebay". Honestly, I don't really see what's wrong with mentioning that. First of all, if somebody decides to do their research on what fair market value is for a card, Ebay IS a pretty reliable source of that, so I would think more power to him. Second, even if you don't want to buy/sell at that price, why is it so necessary to say "Well why don't you go buy/sell it on Ebay then?"... it just seems incredibly adolescent in nature (OK, I know some of you are in fact adolescents image but maturity is a good thing no matter when you pick it up image ); why not just say "no thanks" or "I'm hoping to get more for it/buy it for less". I don't have a problem with people rejecting an offer that's made based on the market Ebay establishes, but to get all snitty about it is quite pointless, isn't it? image

WRONG, and I will buy EVERY Shaq GU/Auto'd you have for $10, because THAT is the market price imageimage

When trading I won't mention Ebay prices but when I am buying I will look at ebay first and use that as my going "Buy Price". Some people will say just buy it on ebay but I like to try and help out fellow board members first. I have purchased some great cards from board members and they didn't have to pay any ebay fees.

    I was only kidding..
    not interested in the Gooden
  • I'll admit....I was one that told bjork to go buy it on Ebay. One thing about Ebay is that it is an auction, wich means you must watch the auction for days of the card you are interested in, then you must outbid everyone else to win that card. Then you have to worry about the seller taking the money without completing the deal. Thanks again for the offer on the Kobe, but I will be holding off for right now.

I am sure you are honest but how is it any different worrying if someone on Ebay takes your money or if you take the money? Also by searching completed auctions you can get a good idea of the standard going rate and bid accordingly.

I don't mind using it as a reference, but use it fairly. I had someone offer me $16 for a '89 Upper Deck PSA 8 Griffey I'm buying because it sold for that on ebay. In all truth, most were selling for $35'ish but the auction he was using was closed early... Also, factor in shipping. They have to pay it on ebay

  • There's not much difference, other than people on here know the regulars and may be able to get that person the seller's address, e-mail address, etc. After so many days on Ebay, the auction is taken off.

  • Completed auctions on Ebay is a great reference tool! What I don't like is when people offer 50% Ebay price and when sellers try to sell for 200% Ebay price. That's why I find it so hard to buy/sell off Ebay. Sure we can all just buy on Ebay, but then why are some people on multiple trading sites? It's so that we can find additional venues to buy/sell/trade our cards.

There are other factors to consider as well. Whether a player was cold, but now hot. If the condition of your card is better than the one auctioned, seller ratings, days they were closed on, etc... Ebay is a guide I like to use sometimes as well, but I can usually find a decent pecentage of close for every poor one you find. I have a lot of auctions that close for more than 50% BV. I use a ton of BIN's and throw in's for them.

  • What gets me is that most of you guys are in to collecting sportscards because thats what you do... COLLECT!!! Then you have your other people that are in it to make money and they live and die by Ebay... If you cant get a certain amount for a card on Ebay then 9 times out of 10 you wont get that price at a show, because almost everybody follows ebay anymore... Soon Card Shows will be Obsolete and everybody will be collecting cards from there own home through ebay. Just an opinion image

What angers me is people that won't pay ebay price for a card because of the beckett values...like say, I offer someone a card for $15 dlvd, because it has been selling for $15 or $16 PLUS shipping on ebay. So what if the card only books $20....when I give it to them even cheaper than they can get it on ebay, and they turn me down because of the book value, that ticks me off....bah, oh well....

I disagree. On Ebay, you have to bid and no guarentee you will get it. I tell people if they want Ebay's prices, then either go to Ebay and bid or I'd be more than willing to sell whatever to them at the BIN rate since they are buying it now, not bidding on it. Ebay is market value, BUT the gap between card prices from auction to auction varies. Good example. I bought a Cal Ripken Jr. Classic Cuts Pants card (listed wrong) for $12.99. Another one listed wrong went for $20.50. Other factors you have to look at is shipping costs. Some people won't bid on a card if shipping is over $3. Another factor is if they accept paypal or not. I know a LOT of people who won't bid on auctions that doesn't accept paypal payments which will lower the price. Also, if the auction doesn't have a scan, it may go lower. There are many possibilities, so you can't say Ebay's prices are accurate. I bought 2 Pee Wee Reese Classic Cuts Jersey cards SP/20 for $9.45 dlvd and $60 dlvd. Bought 2 Tommy John Classic Cut Patch cards SP/15 for $15.45 and $51. Big gap between prices. Then, there are the bid wars and shill bidding. So, when I hear "That's what they go for on ebay", I tell them to go to Ebay then.

  • I understand that there's a lot of variables when it comes to Ebay, but usually it's not all that difficult to discern a range on what an item would typically sell for and make (or accept/reject) an offer based on that record. I won't knock anybody for trying to sell for more or buy for less; it just doesn't make sense to get all snooty about somebody doing their due dilligence image

Yes, but when someone who want what an auction end at, they basically want to get a card cheap without the inconvenienced of getting sniped. If you want the price it ends on Ebay, why not just get it from Ebay? Then you will have to wait til auction end and hopefully you don't get sniped. Then you have to pay $2.50-$3 on top of ending price for shipping and handling if you don't get sniped.
