  • That is one great looking Morgan and I'll bet the seller is very pleased with the price realized!! Throw away the Heritage Value Index (or any other) on that one!! image

I am curious if the coin has the color that is in the image. As you know, Heritage is somewhat lacking in imaging. If it does indeed have that color, it is one I have never seen on a Morgan before, and I have handled thousands of them.

Yes, that is one very pretty coin. Those colors really seem to set each other off. I'm sure whoever won it is very pleased with it.

  • That is crazy money. I wonder if the coin looks like the first or the second picture in real life? If it is the 2nd the buyer might be a little unhappy.

Where does one go on the Heritage website to find the hammer prices of lots in the Long Beach sale?

    Thanks,

  • I need to work on my vocabulary. That coin was described as being "midnight blue and royal purple".

I know, maybe I can borrow my daughter's crayon box for insipration!

don't know where for a list, but if you're looking for particular lots just click on Adrian's link and scroll up to "jump to lot" and enter the lot number you are looking for.

I'm not sure how to link but the lots i picked up and am very pleased with are

    7025
    7257
    7641
    8822

mostly toned stuff, the reverse of the Bay Bridge is perfect, absolutely extraordinary. The strike of the 26-D is massive, the toning much lighter than appears in the heritage photo, a liner 65, couple of very light scratches on portrait I think are the difference. My "The Morgan," well it's different, i like the superhero/racoon toning thingy on the obverse, the rev toning is just a bonus. The reverse toning on the walker is deep and luscious, the blushing eagle.

The amusing part of LB for me was showing coinguy a "toned" walker i picked up on the bourse. It's a 17p in an anacs 63 holder that has, in Mark's words, "almost environmental damage." Fortunately i don't think he had eaten recently and was able to hold down whatever food he had in his stomach. He is every bit the gentleman we know from around here, and then some.

hopefully i'll make the lunch next time and meet some more of you's.

It is a beauty and one of many I sold to the consignor a while back. It looks pretty much like the top picture, not nearly as dark as the bottom one. He did pretty well on that one I might add. I always sell too cheap. image

"It was the one I was gonna chase..." (Adrian): The high bidder is very fortunate that Adrian decided not to bid on this one. Sometimes, serendipity happens.

"One of many I sold to the consignor." (Morganluver): This coin looked like a Morganluver piece, and the high bidder probably surmissed that to be the case after reading ML's remarks about the NY collection here.

"This is crazy money." (Dweebe): To the contrary, I suspect the winner thinks he got an incredible bargain. In fact, I happen to know he did.

Well, gemtone65, when I saw the color of the coin I thought of two people; you and me. Since I know that I did not get the coin I will surmise that you did. Nice score!image

    "This is crazy money."

Just goes to show you that if you don't know your market you could end up looking like........you don't know your market.....to 9,000 people!

I was willing to go to $3000 for that coin. However, i could not afford to spend a great deal of money in that sale (because i've
purchased so many coins lately) and so did not even bid on it.

I know who the very savy owner is (and i don't say he's savy just from this one purchase, he's bought some of my very best...and he is a
very patient and astute negotiator) and i've asked him if i could take some worthy shots of it so we can have it for our image collections.

It stood out in the sale.....to a person who knows his toned Morgas. It has unusual colors, in copious quantities, in intense shades and
the hits are all pre toning hits. A total monster.

Richard: I feel that I did pretty well on that piece too. This coin reminded me a lot of that piece of yours where Adrian and I got into a bidding war at the end, with the final price jumping $800 or so in the last few seconds. Fortunately, I dodged a bullet on this one.

I've missed you on E-bay. Somehow, the auctions aren't as much fun without you posting your wonderful material. Come back!

    regards,

    Hi Marshall,

Glad you got that coin. It should compliment that purple PL you got from me a while back. I also appreciate you "missing" me on E-Bay. As I said before, I was losing too much money on E-Bay with those no reserve auctions and just felt like I could do better selling privately and through major auctions(I have, but am still selling privately way below what they are bringing in auction). I just sent a dozen extremely nice toned coins(mostly Morgans) to a guy yesterday on approval(that's the way I sell) that were as nice or nicer that most of the toned coins in the Heritage sale. This guy has been buying virtually everything I get. So if you or anyone else would like to get in the "loop" for nice toned coins of all types on an approval basis, just let me know. Thanks again Marshall, and hope you enjoy this coin as much as I did.

To steal one of GSAGUY's sayings. That coin looks like an old friend.
Richard when you got that coin was it raw?
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

Good work Marshall! Neat coin with beautiful color. How'd you do overall in the auction? Was this your only purchase? I thought that for the most part many beautifully toned coins went for a song.

The only piece that I could remember selling to the consignor of the 'Eye Appeal' collection was an end roll toned 84-O in DMPL. He had such a high reserve on that particular lot (it included two coins) that it didn't sell.

ArtR, why don't you post a pic of a 'new friend' of yours?imageimage

    ArtR,

No, it was in the current holder. It's kind of funny how many "old friends" continue to resurface on occasion, and typically sell for more money. That tells me that the market for the "right" toned coins is still relatively strong.

    GSAGUY,

Thanks again for that "mystery box", and so far I'm just dreaming about it. Thankfully, no nightmares yet. image

GSAGuy: I bid on 2 lots. The one I lost was 7253. I was in the competition, but at least 2 other bidders outbid me. I was informed that the coin in person was not quite up to the scan, which looked sensational. That led to me revise my initial assessment of that piece.

I was also told that the NY eye appeal collection, at least insofar as the toned dollars were concerned, had no reserves. That also influenced my bidding, favorably I might add. Perhaps that 2 lot DMPL set of dollars was an exception to the no reserve formulation. It did seem to me that the reserve price for that lot, along with a few other DMPL toned MS63-64 pieces, was not realistic. I'm sure people have said the same thing about some of my purchases (in fact, just look above in this thread), but at those reserve prices for that quality, I think we're talking about being buried for a lifetime.

See you in Baltimore, probably on Friday.

    ArtR,

Wow, what a pretty "new friend" you have there. I'm always looking for "new friends" or even some "old friends", so if you ever get too many friends, please let me know. image
