Images of the doctored (frost added coin) that PCGS took care of.

Original discussion of this coin is posted here.

I just realized, while going through my coin images, that when I had originally posted about this experience, I didn't include pics. Okay, well, I'm a little slow in my old age.image

It occurs to me, though, that it might be helpful for those who haven't encountered this and maybe make it a little easier to detect if I provided these images. Here's the coin:

Note the unevenness of the frost; the way it is opaque in some areas and translucent in others. Note also the discoloration on the major devices, particulary when compared to the color of the minor devices. In addition, the frost on the reverse comes to an abrupt halt at the top of the banner and doesn't extend above it.

Here is the real giveaway, though. Closeup image of the reverse:

Note how the frost splashes over in to the fields making it look like it was painted on. Frankly, I'm still wondering how this got past Heritage.

so how did they do it?
and how did PCGS get it off?

    Dave,

I don't know the answer to either of those questions. Maybe one of the experienced people here would know how frost is faked, or how it is removed. When I got the coin back from PCGS raw, it looked as it should and there was no damage from reversing the doctoring. BTW, it was on one of my recent submissions and came back as a PR67.

My guess is a small rubber tip with frost paint... at least for the edges of the devices... how they do the fields, not really sure... probably just painted somehow...

The frost in question will come off with alcohol or running under hot water.

What the frost material is I do not know.

A dealer friend of mine told me that nail polish remover was used in years past. The npr would then crystalize, I believe after already in the holder and form a more frosty appearance. I have even heard rumors, and again I say rumors that the infamous 1959 Franklin in PR69DCAM was done with this method. Although I have no proof, please defer all questions to my Lawyer Michael Fattarosi image

I guess I should have put something about David Hall or artificial toning in the title. Bump in case somebody who's interested in what a frost doctored coin looks like missed this.
