Are prices nuts in the Heritage Long Beach sale?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
I just put a bunch of bids in at Heritage's web site for their Long Beach auction. I've been outbid on every coin that interested me, and I wasn't lowballing anything. As Crazy Eddie used to say, "Prices are Insane!"

Some of the stuff I've been watching is already at strong money. I'm scared to think what it will do once the floor bidders have a crack at it.

I'll go better than that. Some of the stuff I'm watching has already gotten to CRAZY money even before it hits the floor.

Really!? I see a few 63-64 common Morgans with what I consider very nice but not monster toning in the 2K-4K range already, I think there's an NGC 64PL with kind of nice color but nothing great at somewhere around 4K+ as well. WOW!

    Morganluver,

I've not yet looked at the lots in person but plan to do so tomorrow. It should be interesting to see what some of these pieces sell for at auction. When I view coins and then decide to bid, I'll typically put an estimated opening price and my highest buy price w/o the juice on my sheet. At that big Goldberg auction last fall, most coins OPENED above my highest buy price and climbed from there! I never raised my paddle.

Interestingly, I've heard that prices for the same material were weak at the Goldberg auction.

Finally, knowing that some of these coins came out of the NYC 'Eye Appeal' collection....I bet you've recognized a few old friends.....bet I will as well.image

  • Not sure where everyone is seeing strong prices but in the seated and bust area prices are low to average. Interestingly, I am really having a tough time finding coins to bid one, nothing really wows me. I prefer CC & S MMs in the seated series.

Will be there live tomorrow and see what's what.

Seated half dimes are calm as usual. Seems like no one really cares for them. I'll enjoy my solitary, lol.

I'll say, just looked at a few myself. There is an 84-O Morgan, PCGS MS64, with nice toning, and I own several coins like this, and right now just with the internet bids it is at $2500. I am starting to think I may have made a mistake yesterday selling several nice toned Morgans, all $100 or less.
  • Sounds like the real play is to submit coins for auction...forget about buying! Twowood

Take a look at lots 6211 and 6274, for example (1798 and 1871-CC dimes).

I just came back in from a little vaca, and ALL of my initial bids were trampled on. Couldn't even up any if I wanted to, as the internet bidding is closed now. Bad timing on my part I guess. I was bidding on a few buffalo nickels, half dimes and seated dimes, for the most part. A few scattered "others" here and there.

What's going on with those MS63 and 64 Morgans going for $3-4K? Who's bidding on them, Forrest Gump? Has PCGS just started a registry set for toned Morgans, limited to those graded at MS64 and below, with extra points for bagmarks on the face, splotchy colors, and hues that favor brown? Has PCGS and NGC announced they will no longer certify any toned coins -- the current supply being all the public is going to get in holders, due to the proliferation of AT coins? I guess I'll have to lower my sights and focus on the less expensive MS65 and MS66 coins in that sale.
  • Saw the same thing during the FUN show...absolutely INSANE !!!
  • image After trying to keep up with the Superior sale the other night, I could understand the Morgan 1895's, but others were trully insane. My cable modem was keeping up, but the start and finish was unbelievable on how fast the prices jumped!
The picture clarity wasn't that great following the lots, and that could explain my amazement in those prices!!!
I'll watch again, but NO WAY I could keep up with the bids!!image

  • Gemtone, you wouldnt wonder where those prices are coming from for common date toned morgans toned with "monster" toning if you looked at ebay at the three or four board members auctions and checked out the bin prices they are asking for those coins or checked what people are paying for them on EBAY. When you double and triple 2500 dollars that is big time profits. That is what is driving this train. Im not saying that it is good or bad or indifferent, im just explaining why people are paying those prices at auction. Those coins are for reselling more than keeping. JMHO. image

Out of all these auctions, I was after only one coin in the Superior auction, a PCGS PR66 Morgan. My thoughts were that it woulld go for $10,000 with the juice, but I gave my dealer the option of going to $13,500 with juice. Coin sold for $14,950, with juice.imageimageimage

  • hey bear, does whats going on with these nutty people mean i can sell my beautifully toned rare coins for enough money that i won't have to worry about going back to work ???
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

Prices are very strong for toned coins. Might be a good time to cull some of your toneys and hold

back the real stunners. You probably could save a lot of money by going to the real market makers

in toned coins and cut out all of the middle men and auction frenzy. These dealers include Tone Killer

(Brian Osborn), Gsa Guy, and Mike DeFalco. They seem to have a base of old time collectors who

sell directly to them. I would keep the day job, money these days doesnt go much further then the

grocery store and the house and car payments. Bear
