Have you ever looked at a pattern coin and wondered: What if this coin was choosen and went into cir

I often wonder when I look at patterns. What if this design was approved over the one we have now?
Would I still like the one we have now as much?

Do you think the 20c denomination would have been more successful if this was the design?

1875 20c J-1392 PCGS-PR64 pattern

This is one of the most beautiful coins I have ever seen
Your thoughts?

I think it is a neat design but not a particularly nice example of the J1392.

It seems that alot of patterns depict a much younger liberty, such as this example and the schoolgirl
    type dollars.

  • I wish we would have used the J-723!

  • Or J-888.

Given the ugly designs we have had over the years, most all the patterns would have been a better choice.
  • I have always been partial to this one:

The Amazonian designs are excellent. I love that eagle.

I've thought about it often - many patterns were great designs. They were sometimes rejected for practical reasons, other times for aesthetics....sure would have loved to have seen the harp-shield reverse on the IHC's or the schoolgirl/eagle combo on the dollar.....image Here is my favorite...the FE obverse of 1856 combined with the harp/ornamental shield reverse....what a great combo!!!

  • Great eagle on the Amazonian but I would rather have a J-888.

The Amazonian Coin would go well with the 1917 Type1 Standing Liberty Quarter

in ohhhhh say MS-68. They would be so lovely that I would be reluctant to spend them.

What do you find so appealing about the J-888??????

I really like stujoe's pattern, but I'm not all that thrilled with the pattern that this thread started with. I like the seated 20 cent better.

Wow! That "boobie" pattern is stunningly beautiful. It's like a round work of geniune art.

  • I've got to say that the Amazonians are some of the finest US patterns. What I've always particularly liked about them is their playful character! Miss Liberty is tickling the bald head of that eagle ... she's not the dour dowager of so many other renditions. Lots of fine missed opportunities, sad to say. And then you look at a SuzieB and just shudder. imageimage

KK, I thought I told you not to look. I guess it is ok since you only mentioned the eagle. image Your 888 reminds me of something but I can't quite place my finger on it. Roman maybe? I don't know but the design is reminiscent of something. I do like it.

I figured as much. I was just kidding around because I knew you were probably reading this thread. image There is nothing wrong with that coin. It is definitely art.

I believe a few years ago, the complete NGC Amazonian set sold for close to a million?
I think , or close to it.

    Brian.
  • Superior Galleries sold it for 1.8 million. Which at the time was the second highest amount paid for U.S. coins.

$1.8M, that was worth it, especially for a complete set.

What if the Schoolgirl, also designed by George Morgan, had become the "Morgan Dollar?"
