Update 03/04/2003

BIG NEWS!

John asked me to post this latest news on his sets. The main thread is on the Registry Board.

From John,

Our county sheriff's department caught the punks who stole my coin sets. As of now I am not entirely sure what was recovered-the deputy said they found a lot of coins. These guys broke into houses in three counties (Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara). And there is a lot of stuff to catalog and photograph. In a brief conversation with the detective, it sounds like the SBA and Kennedy and Franklin collections may be in tack. The platinum and gold sets most likely have been broken out and may have been pawned. They found some empty broken plastic holders in the trash. I will have more comment on this when I know more. I really need to find out how/why they targeted us.

Thanks all--John Ryan

Thanks,
Larry

  • I agree with the above why would you leave a 2nd and 3rd place reg. set in your house unprotected? Its to bad but they could have provented it.

  • I would love to hear more details. But I smell inside job if nothing else was taken. I smell something else if there was no forced entry. Two other things trouble me as well. BTW was there a police report?

Mistake 1: We are devastated as this collection was our hedge against the souring economy A hedge?

Mistake 2: Back in August we purchased our first home and we have a hefty mortgage Why speculating with coins?

Mistake 3: These coins were our insurance that we would be able to meet that mortgage during these tough times Poor insurance, use cash in the bank instead!

Mistake 4: I’m self employed and work has not been coming in as it has in the past Why did you buy a home? Why are you speculating in coins?

Mistake 5: any advice on how to find these coins would help--who to contact Hello! Try calling the police!!!
  • It sucks to hear of this happening to anybody.

Talk about dumb crooks. Who in the world would steal Kennedy halves and SBA dollars? You can't even use them in pop machines.

    Hey Eddie,

I'm sure the victim of these scumbags feels grateful for the empathy you've expressed.

    Russ, how's this:

Sorry your coins were stolen and I am glad that the cops caught the slimeballs that did this dirty deed. I hope they get some time for their actions. I am glad that there was a happy ending to all of this and I hope that you are made whole by the time it is completely over. Also, I am glad that you did not collect bust coins are anything interesting, as the scumbags would have probably been able to quickly sell real coins.

I don't know if I should be encouraging you or not, but sometimes you really make me laugh, Ed! image
  • An almost great ending. I share with others in congratulating you in the recovery of most of your coins.
