Speckled is a term that comes in quite handy for the cardboard US Mint Set toned coins. I tried to include descriptors that I actually use when I sell coins.

Some of the ones that make me chuckle are various adjectives used to describe coins that may not be attractive. Here's a list:

    rose (usually means milky)
lavendar (sounds nice, but it's usually deep dark purple)
    heather (brown)
    russet (brown again)
    root beer (dark brown)
    slate (unattractive grey)
ebony or charcoal (not good on coins)

Have fun adding to the list!

On a coin with a woman or womans portrtait a painted lady. Or when you believe the toning to be natural that one was made with natures paint brush. When you think that the toning was a.t. baked. Also listing source toning like album toning, or envelope toning.

  • This close to a thread I wanted to see but not quite there.

I am having trouble coming up with the neat color names that others use to describe coins. There are some mentioned above. I think I know what:

    Rose
    Lavender
    Champagne

look like. What I want to see is images with the color and name put together. I would use it as a reference. I intend to gather up samples of color on coins, post them and solicit names for their colors. I will do so when I get some time. Unless someone else has already done this?

Carl, that is a great idea, and I will help if I'm able. I'd love to see the pics.

I am seeing "woodgrain" used more and more. Wow, the lexicon is progressing nicely.

I have seen "polychromatic" and its a different type of toning every time.
I thinks its a very broad adjective. I like it.

    "Original"
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

<< <i>A stunning translucent cobalt that extends in to the fields. About halfway in to the fields the color begins it's transition in to the spectrum of the rainbow. It changes to yellow, than darkens to gold than red, navy blue, and finishes with a dramatic purple at the outer edge. >>
