Multiple coin holder - Is it possible?

Alright. Here is a question for the Message Board. Should PCGS or NGC have a holder that holds more than one coin? Example, the P and D mint coins for a specific year or the five statehood quarters.

The main problem, as I see it, is where will it stop and the cost for stocking all the different type holders that will be requested. Well what do your think - can we support such a concept?

Not if it changes the slab size. We would have to buy new boxes & albums.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Or for proof sets.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • What about for special situations like a pedigree set so one could mount it on the wall.

  • Could be alot of grading fees. Going to a multiple coin holder and then back to a single coin holder.

  • Along the same lines, a coin holder for P-D-S would be a cool idea as well.

Would they all necessarily be the same grade? If not, that might be a problem. If so, what are the chances of sending in multiples (5 stated quarters for example) and all grading the same? I've seen alot of results come back with a 1 point variance from expected. If the multi-slab has a grade for each, I see it getting very busy looking.
  • I see the wisdom of the idea from some perspectives, but in the long run I think it is not going to work. The more slabs you try to coordinate the more combinations you have (mixing grades or not; how big is a 'set' etc) and as the n-size of coins in a set goes up so too does the complexity of encasing it. I think there would be a threshold where it is not profitable.

The one way I do support this is that there should be a way to slab all the coins in a particular proof set and to flag or label them as having come from the same set, regardless of the grades awarded. This would permit a birthday gift (for instance) of a slabbed proof set w/ a professional guarantee that it came from the same set -- somehow, I like that idea.

Take some super glue and glue the edges of your slabs together, same effect image

Interlocking slabs. Just slide them together...image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • MadMarty -- EXCELLENT idea. PCGS are you listening...? image

image OK let me see if I have this right. Send in an original sealed proof set, they break open the holder, take the coins out of the holder, put them all into another holder, seal that holder, and provide a guarantee that they all were orginally together in a different holder. imageimage
