Oh no, I think I like toned coins

Toned coins, where to start. Several weeks ago I was kinda freakish about not having a toned coin in my collection. Blast white, not even light golden rim toning was aceptable, even faint amounts, even amounts of toning not visible to the human eye was acceptable. People who collected toned coins were freaks of nature. I even considered using the nickname of Tarn-X

Then something happened, not sure if it was due to all the cool toned pics members are using as icons or if it's simply a natural progression, but I now find myself attracted to toned coins. At first I did not, I would not admitt it, I couldn't admitt for fear of public humiliation, the shame of it all..........

Holycrap! I like toned coins, how the hell am I going to explain this about face to some of my collector friends. I know they will think it's a joke, but I like them, I really do. Oh great, heres another topic to discuss with the therapist.

I think I could stare at a monster toned coin for hours. I have to have them all. I've even considered bidding on coins that I would usually never bid on, even dimes, and I hate dimes, I have to have them....THERE TONED......There I said it.....

You're preaching to the choir, Maddox. I had a similar revelation recently and, most of my purchases at FUN were toned.
  • Everyone has to come out of the closet sometime Max! Just change your icon to a rainbow flag and everyone will still like you!

I know exactly what you mean. I can and do stare at my toned coins for hours and I especially like to look at many of them with a 5-7 power loupe. You can see how the colors flow down into the crevices and recesses. It's really amazing and no, I'm not on drugs at least not this early LOL. This is especially cool to do with vividly colored rainbows.

  • Maddux,
I think there is a good book you can read... Green Coins and Ham. I have forgotten a great deal about the book but it goes something like this....

Green Coins, Red Coins, Rainbows Too...
    No..No..No... I Don't Like Them, Sam I Am

I mean... I have seen a few toned coins including a nice weirded out Lincoln but I guess I haven't really caught on to why they are so popular. With time I guess I might go through what you described.

I was the same way with white coins. I collect colorful art and I am sure that is why I am drawn to toned coins. Each and every toned coin is unique compared to blast white coins which are all the same. A beautifully toned coin is a work of natural art and my opinion is that even at the prices these are going for today they are still undervalued!

think about how much a original paiting would cost from a high profile artist.

here are some of the paintings I own

  • I forgot to mention that at the end of the book, Sam I Am actually starts liking Toned Coins. I still don't know what the big deal is about those toned coins. For me nothing beats the natural look of a coin.

  • Maddox,
I can relate to what you are saying, I too for the first time bought 2 tone indiana head cents at a show a couple weeks ago. They were low grade but I couldn't resist. beautiful colors. Now I noticed I have been watching for more. Oh, where will it end.

  • Toned coins certainly have a lot more "going on" as compared to white coins.
