Will you give me some advice on a purchase?

I saw a 1909 S Red MS-65 Segs today at a coin show. I can buy the coin for $485.00. However, is this coin in a SEGS holder a standard for the MS-65 published in Coin World, or any other publication. I would love to cross this coin to PCGS, but I'm just not sure that it would cross. I guess what I"m saying if I keep it in a SEGS holder is it worth $485.00? If I break it out to send it in raw to PCGS and it comes back MS-64 Red the price goes to about $190.00. I would welcome any suggestions! What would you experts do?

SEGS is known throughout the industry as very lenient on grading MS coins. You can expect the coin NOT to cross either to PCGS or NGC. Usually, a discount of grade points from 1 to 3 is expected on SEGS. They are known for the attribution and variety designation, but that's about it. Don't expect anything but a downgrade if you choose to crack it out.

Whew, I almost bought it. Thanks all. I had my doubts. I did previously cross a SEGS 1914 Lincoln from MS-65 Brown to NGC MS-65 Brown. Maybe I was just lucky.

You could also learn to grade your series, and then buy the coin and not the holder. Who knows, it maybe is a solid 65 and would grade a pcgs 65 (I doubt it would cross in the holder due to slab bias). When in doubt, pass...

I really love the 53-S ms65 FBL frankies the boss buys in segs holders. I look at the bell with the eye and say ok where did the grader see the bell lines, I don't.. Then I get my loop out and still see no bell lines, and say what the hell was that grader smoking that day this coin came accross his table.

I can't say much more on Segs coins, because I love my job and I want to keep it. But I am always honest when a customer calls me regarding a coin in a Segs holder, and what I think the coin will cross into. And all I can say here is it is not good... Ok I straped my fire suit on = flame it baby

Aside with the grading issue, I have a very serious issue with SEGS slabbing artificially toned coins and this includes copper that has been recolored. So, even on the off-chance that the coin was technically graded correctly there is still the chance that it was not an original color.
