Look at the relief & detail

on this 18th century coin.
One would figure that with advances in technology over the last 250 years or so, that modern US mints would be able to make nicer coins in the quantities needed,, but no, the reliefs are getting lower, no detail and a definite lack of creativity(not to infer I could do better...)
At the rate things are going, soon the US will be competing with Sweden for the most boring coin designs. The state quarter attempt is good in theory, but in practice is a very feeble attempt to demonstrate artistic creativity and detail on a coin. I understand the mint changes the original artist's renditions & I do blame the mint for this.
Even modern commemoratives are 2nd rate compared to the comms. from earlier in this century.
I suppose the Euro coins aren;t much better though, have coins become more of a functional 'token' rather than an artistic icon to collect?

I'm getting into world and ancients gradually, too. And for precisely the reasons discussed here.
