How on earth did they screw this up?

Golden Dollar

I had never seen the competing desings for the sacagewea dollar, how did they manage to pick the worst possible coin out of these choices?

correct me if I'm wrong, but if you took that first obverse #97 (a good, simple, strong obverse) and paired it with the #15 reverse (which is reminiscent of the texas commem design) you'd have one pretty sharp coin there.

the obverse and reverse they chose would have been my last choice, i could have designed it better myself.

Wow! I would like to see the #15 reverse used at some point in the future. Very powerful!

    well, i guess not.

but i'm trying to figure out who would think the chosen design was a better fit for coinage. it's the same person and same eagle so there's no political forces. the chosen obverse is clearly a poor one for a coin - can you think of a single coin with a 3/4 portrait rather than a profile that looks even DECENT? and the reverse is soooooooooo blah, any of the other 3 were better.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like how the coin turned out. Obverse #97 is hideous. Reverse #15 is cool, but I like #35 better.

i think the fake gold color turns me off the most. i hate clad, but give me clad over fake-gold-painted-clad anyday.

  • The rev used was the best one. What killed this coin was the fact that they made it smaller than a half and it had someone on it that 50% of the people in the US had not heard of.
  • I like #97 and #15. But they don`t remind you of the obverse of a Buff. nickel and the reverse on a Peace Dollar.
