Another fake T$ Test

keojkeoj Posts: 980 ✭✭✭
Okay, the last one that TDN posted was a reasonably quick one to identify. Here's another one with the same question, it it true or is it a fake.

My view is that it is a fake (I may be wrong but I don't think so).

Trade Dollar

Here is my reasoning:
1) The mm is different than any I've ever seen (possible new variety but I don't think so)
2) The Eagle's plume on the left side of the neck is wrong for a Type I/I
3) Miss Liberties robes seem a little too tooled to me.

The hard one about this is that these are all very, very subtle things and still I'm not 100% sure that what I think I see is true. These Trade Dollars are getting tougher and tougher to spot....especially on eBay when pictures are poor. So the lesson?.....by the coin not the slab, unless you can't really see the coin then buy the coin thats slabbed, unless the slab is one of the bad slabs, then buy.......

    This is a toughie. I've never seen a I/I '76-CC non-DDR before.

I can't tell from the picture. The neck feathers could be glare. The rest of the coin looks ok to me. I'm not sure I'd buy it tho, just because of where it's being sold. Kind of hard to get your money back if it's not genuine.
  • What about the lower tip of the wing on the right, is it cut off that bad above the vine on trade dollars

  • I'll trust your judgement, Joe. When you look at one series enough you can see something sometimes with a coin, and know there's a problem, yet have trouble describing it. I do that with the Seated Quarters.
I notice the denticle left of the first S in STATES is long. Did you notice that?

To EVP and seekers of arcane Trade Dollar info:

Yes, there are three dies that know of for Type I/I 76-CC Trade Dollars: DDR, Wide CC, and normal. This sort of looks like a "normal" except that the CC are very small and tight together. As I said, it could be a new die variety but I'd be a little suprised.

I had the same thought about the wing tip, good catch but it could be just a poor pic.

I dunno about this one except that its a VERY good fake. This is what makes raw coins on eBay tough.

Thanks for posting this KEOJ. I looked at that Trade dollar for a long time when it was first posted on eBay. Something seemed not quite right about it, but I could not put my finger on it.

Yep, those are type II neck feathers with a type I berry under the claw. It's a good fake, though.
