the pic of that proof 70 dcam lincoln says it all

someone just posted the official selling price of that coin as over 39,000 with the buyers fee! Besides the fact that the blotchy toning on the obverse makes this coin over graded by at least 3 points, how do most of you feel about paying 4 or 5 figure somes for modern condition rarities that are also not rare coins in mint state or proof condition?
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

  • Sad, sad - just awful - as my pennance - I will offer the first this coin to the first person that deposits $10K in my paypal account - it's the least I can do! image

  • Well, I would not mind paying a premium on a modern rarity. But not 3 or 4 times. Especially if a coin is overgraded which by way of the grade being inflated would contribute to it`s rarity.
  • I like the obverse on yours better. Sorry i dont have 10 g's to spare but if i did i'd buy gemini's 1856 0 seated half, now thats what a real collector coin looks like! I guess it's time to start going thru original 63 proof sets to look for dcam lincolns!

As a Lincoln Proof man,I have to say that was ridiculous. There is no way that is a PR70.Even if it were I wouldn't have paid that.

    Don,

That coin looks better than the $39K piece. I wonder if PCGS is going to end up eating it?

The talk at the show was PCGS is not wanting this coin back for grade review. I didn't see it but those who did left little doubt about it.

Frank - one dollar cash for your cent ,you pay shipping. By the way, If that is your real dog and not

just a picture, I think that he is a great looking animal. And yes , with the cigars, you are starting

to look almost like brothers.I think that identical twins would be going a tad to far, but brothers

    would seem doable. Bear

Assume this was a legitimate sale, and the money was burning a hole in the buyer's pocket. That person could have instead chosen to acquire a Shield Earring or Schoolgirl pattern dollar in silver, perhaps 6 of each known, at the nearby Superior auction and had funds left over to acquire one of the fantstic proof seated half dollars in that sale as well. Instead, he or she (okay, not likely, but let's be politically correct) bought a coin with a mintage of 3 million for date and method of manufacture, with untold billions of the same design struck. Do you think the new owners of those patterns would want to trade?

I suppose the new owner never heard the advice "buy the coin not the holder," while the old owner was undoubtedly glad he never heard it or ignored the advice.

If I was the new owner of that expensive penny, I would seriously look into the

ancient and honorable practice of Hiri Kiri.I wonder if it would work using a butter knife?

  • Now I wish I had never sold the PCGS MS69 1965 Lincoln with heavy cameo contrast I once owned. The only reason I sold it was because I thought it was overgraded by at least 2 points. Now that I have seen that 1963, It wasn't such a bad coin after all!

Does anyone know the buyer, what a wonderful way for PCGS to pick up some advertising AND get a big rush of generic modern submissions.

If it was overgraded as much as people say, what would PCGS pay on the grade review - fair market value or what it sold at auction for?
  • I think you can remove the "if" from that statement.

What it realized at auction IS its fair market value (for the moment) so I think PCGS would be hard-pressed to claim another figure.

But, perhaps they could say: Is the label crisp and clean? Does it say PR70? Were you able to enter it in your registry set? Did your point total go up? So... what's your gripe? image

Anyone care to argue with me about whether or not people are buying slabs or coins?

  • If by "people" you mean modern collectors in general, I would. If by people you mean the high-bidder and the underbidder on this coin, that would be a short argument.

Actually, come to think of it, I would prefer to argue the latter. image
