Adrian don't do this to me!

Browsing thru eBay and this catches my eye. 1866 Seated Half, no motto, NGC Proof 66

And it has a BIN of UNDER $5,000! Had to look and if it was I was going to do the BIN. I'd find the money somewhere.

Looks like a nice coin at a decent price.

Just bid $1 under the BIN price and that should be his reserve price. I just saved you $1. image

That's a coin I'd be thrilled to own. I'm no big fan of toning in general, but that's the type which is very attractive to me.

Slightly lightened toning on a gorgeous design- I would love to own that coin!

Sorry, guys - someone is confused. An 1866 would be a With Motto, not a No Motto. I'll send a message to Adrian.

  • Somebody really screwed up with that description. Granted, it is a nice coin, i'd rather have an MS coin that's PL than nearly any proof coin. And it's in a new NGC holder, wonder if it would cross... Oh well, maybe I don't have anything good to say about it since I don't have a spare 4k laying around anymore after my last seated half purchase.
    Excellent toning, lousy picture.

Oh yeah the motto. I should have caught that! image

    "Excellent toning, lousy picture."

Also, if the picture is so lousy, how can you tell that the toning is "excellent". Just curious.

  • anaconda,
I'm wondering, do you have any MS pics available?
Just aking since I always like comparing them.

  • adrian,

It's the pattern of the toning i meant... going around the whole coin. I hate it when there're any cresents.

So far Coinguy1 seems to be the only one who caught why the description made my heart stop.

The 1866 No Motto Proof half is a unique coin! It was part of the set of 1866 No Motto quarter, half, and dollar that were stolen from DuPont back in 1967. The quarter and half were recovered when they were purchased over the counter by two different Calafornia dealers about 5 or 6 years ago. The half dollar would probably be an eighty to one hundred thousand dollar coin, and here it was listed with a BIN under $5,000.

In fact when the half was recovered the dealer didn't realize what he had, neither did the members of his staff. They sent the coin off to NGC for certifying and the people at NGC didn't recognize it either and simply sent it back slabbed as a regular proof seated half! It wasn't until after it had been back from NGC for a couple weeks before one of the numismatists on the staff realized "Hey isn't this thing supposed to have the motto on the back?"

Ah! I didn't catch that! No wonder you were frothing at the mouth!

  • That is a nice coin but only like 3800 out of my league. I wish I had that kind of money. Ahhhh the life of a blue color worker and a student to boot.

I knew about the "No Motto" 1866 Half dollar and just assumed that Adrian made a typo. You're right though about finding the money somewhere if he did make that mistake. Since he is so knowlegeble, it would be fair game to pick it off for under $5000.00.

Just curious, so don't anybody get bent out of shape -- here's my question(s):

... the dealer didn't realize what he had, neither did the members of his staff. They sent the coin off to NGC for certifying and the people at NGC didn't recognize it either ...

The first five responders to this thread (not to mention who else may have not discovered it) missed the possibility of this being a "typo" or "unique" coin, so isn't it also possible Anaconda could have missed it too? And although this statement is a little presumptuous, but, even CoinGuy1 SEEMED to not know of the possibility (or maybe he knows who has the coin). If so, would it really be fair to just, er, "buy" it for approx $75 - 95K (according to Anaconda) below market value? I mean, if it were the "No Motto" Conder mentions, the BIN would obviously be a mistake OR Anaconda didn't know the uniqueness of the coin.

Just confused - seems the appropriate thing would have been to advise the seller or at least ask if he really knew what the heck he is doing. Maybe I only think that is what I would do, since I've never been faced with such a situation.

I wouldn't feel bad about cherrypicking from Anaconda - he has such nice ones anyway.

Gilbert, I knew the listing was a mistake because the coin was imaged and I could see it was a "with motto". And, I did let the seller know, as I would have if the coin had been a "no motto".
