OK, where is the sleeper series?

mrpaseomrpaseo Posts: 4,753 ✭✭✭
It seems that everywhere I go, my direction of collecting happens to be the newest craze! So, I end up buing all the coins for a primium...then, they crash, a vicious cycle...lol. So, I ask you all, where are the sleepers? What series is currently undervalued and can be collected without mortgaging the house?

I'm thinking Ikes, what do you all think?

Please give your opinions,
Ray

I hate to share this with anyone. But, there are some outstanding values in Franklin ms65 non FBL halves.... Shhhhhhhh, keep it quiet...

There's a lot of talk that silver commemoratives will continue to be strong. If the mint decides to redo all of the current coins over the next few years, that could make many of the series popular.
    Just MHO.

Jefferson nickels and Roosevelt dimes are real sleepers.
I also agree with you on the Ikes.

  • Roosies in ms67 seem to be a sleeper to me. The ms68's go for crazy money, but can usually find ms67's for 20-30 all day long various places. Short sets of Walkers is a nice little set as well.

If you are indeed the new craze jinx, let me complete my Walker set before you bring the trains image

    Got Morgan?
  • I got my dimes and jeffersons. Seems like no one really pays much attention to these and I can get them at really great prices on ebay and else where.

I agree with the Roosevelt Dime sentiment. Slabs are cheap, high grade toned raws are even cheper. I'm putting together a entire set in a LOC album of toned silvers, that highest amount paid for 1 coin was $16.00 with most between $2-$3, and they are all MS65+ coins with toning. Good looking set especially in the old school album.

As for Ikes, nows a great time for deals. I just sold two 69DCAMS on Ebay for really good prices, much less then what I paid 6 months ago.

  • Yup, Rooseys and Jeffs. The best 1-5 coins of each date bring big bucks but the rest are cheap.

  • Sleepers? Depends on why you are buying. No such thing as "investing" in coins, only those who kid themselves.

If you want a series which has appreciation potential over the long term and is truly rare w/o dealer manipulation and grading games then look to anything Seated and Barber.

Barber halves in MS65+, impossible to find when nice. Bonus is the series is doable if patient and willing to get AU-MS.

Seated $ and Halves are my favorites. Keep your Morgans with pops in the 100 thousands.

Bottom line colect what you like not what will go up!

This has long been the best way to enjoy collecting AND to make a profit.

I use to think the half cent and three cent coins were. I guess they are because it been nearly 200 year and they still haven't awake. Morgan are always a good investment but let face it the state quarter proof sets have been doing the best for me. I brought my 99 set for 24.99 or something like that and look at the price of them now. what untill 08 and see what will happen to the price!
