ms-61+. unless the scan is not true, likely overdipped, but still a nice coin.

I know next to nothing about mercs. But will guess as it will be a learning experience.

AU-55, plus the color looks weird.

Au/58, maybe 55. I agree with dorkkarl, it looks overdipped, unless that's the scan. Still nice.

Here is the obverse for a coin of this type. 1916 thru 1925.

    image
  • Whizzed !!!

Nice nose break in front of the eye too...is this thing a fake ?? Something just don't look right
  • Missing bridge of nose variety
  • Fairlaneman -

Unless the scan is distorting the coin, I think something is amiss here. I'd say somewhere between AU58 and MS61, cleaned in a not ideal way.

Don't like the look of those surfaces, especially compared to some of the others posted below.

One man's opinion, hope that helps.

All right, I'm going out on a limb and say it has been whizzed. mdwoods

  • Part of the nose is missing in front the eye.
  • Oh oh, is it counterfeit ?

Upon further review, the date looks a little funny, (away from the rim and the '2' looks too funny - pun intended).

and the Reverse of a Merc Dime of the period 1916 thru 1925. Something was missing after 1925 on the reverse of Merc Dimes.

  • altered date, it was probably 41. The detail it to weak for a 1920's merc.

KK are you guessing ? If not tell the good folks here what is wrong with this dime.

    Ken
  • For me it was the lack of detail, but if u compare the leaves by the axe head they are differant lengths from each other. also the stars look diferant in size. what I said was probably not the what you were thinking though.

    hi fairlaneman
the only thing I have to compair it with is a pcgs ms65 merc. my 65 has a fill nose but the same coarse look as this one. it very hard for me to tell on these small coins. God only knows what my raw half dime are.

Ok folks here is the scoop on this very nice Fake 21P Merc Dime. First on the obverse the 9 is completely wrong. It is the style that was used after 1925. The loop closes completely where the early style was open. The 2 looks to be wrong also. I do not have a early dime to look at but I believe it the style used in the forties. On the reverse where the branchs come under the sticks right at the middle band part of the branchs are missing. This is the style that emerged in 1926 and was standard through the rest of the series. Before 1926 the branches were touching the sticks for the most part. Some Dimes of 1924 and 25 did have this detail missing though. For sure this is a altered 1941P Merc Dime.

Let me add that the owner of this dime, a coin dealer in Salem, Oregon, was kind enough to let me take pictures of this coin to post here so people would be aware of these. The dealer positively will not sell this coin. When he gets this sort of stuff he mutilates it or just does away with them. He, IMO, is a credit to our hobby.

Among other things he had was a 14D Cent, 3 Legged Buffalo and of all things a 1931 Washington. We had a good laugh about the Washington.

Although, to be fair, I didn't call it an altered date...

I should have gone with my very first reaction. That being the 2 in the date didnt look right for that year.
Also like you pointed out,the 9 is wrong too.I missed that. The open loop 9 and the closed looped of the later years.
You got me good on that on.Thanks for the refresher guy.image

Doen't the orange peel mean it was dipped ? The luster definitely isn't there in my opinion. This is a guess,MS61.
    Now I am embarassed.image

Doen't the orange peel mean it was dipped ?
I was thinking the orange peel affect was due to late die state. Its more akin to deteriorating die I thought.
I guess in this case the lack-luster obverse is due to handling during tooling?

There is no reason to be embarrased about not picking up that this coin is a Fake. Most people, and I am also going to guess that alot of dealers, would not pick up that it is fake. So much attention is paid to the 16D that some of the other dates such as this one the 21D,25D and 26S are forgotten to have been worked over also. This is the first 21P I have seen like this. Of course Oregon is not exactly considered the haven for coins either. Collectors should always keep thier excitement in check when viewing key dates or semi-key dates so that a example like this will not part them from thier money.

I searched high and low for some decent Mercurys... didn't find a thing.... But I am sure that one has to keep searchin the shops and try to be at the right place at the right time.......
