Lincoln with rainbow colors, been cleaned?

If a Lincoln cent has rainbow coloring (including purple) does this mean it probably was cleaned/dipped?

If it has not been cleaned/dipped does this coloring reduce the value?

here is a link to a coin that brought up the question

    I wouldn't take a chance on that coin for 5 dollars...much less 95!

I have several rainbow lincolns that I picked up at local shows for literally pennies. Some with wild purples, but nothing quite like that. For $95 I would want to see it in a slab before I plunked down my money!

  • Michael,

Have you tried to have any of those purple Lincolns graded (PCGS)?

Cents that are colored like that are usually the result of environmental damage due to improper handling, cleaning, or some other "unnatural" effect. I'll take mine brown or red, thanks.

I actually just got it (purple/magenta) slabbed by ANACS (MS65), I don't send cheap coins to PCGS for slabbing. ANACS usually runs a special 10-10-10 and I save up some lower end toned coins and send them over just so I can be sure!

Remind me and I'll try to post some pics. I also got a wild 1962 proof with crazy colors, almost looks like a toned proof IHC. I really like toned copper. I also found a purplish 1976 lincoln in a proof set.

    Interesting colors for copper!

I sent in a similarly toned, beautiful 1909 VDB for grading and PCGS bagged it as AT! The coin, in my opinion, is original and untouched.

    Welcome Gene,

    Lincoln guys rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks to good to be true on that 1914,but I could be wrong.

  • Just pulled a beautiful purple & red with textile pattern toned 1951-s cent from a long forgotten box of misc wheats. This one was stored wrapped in cloth and in an envelope marked simply "MS" by someone long ago. Not worth slabbing but looks great in the Type Set book. Also grabbed a 1984-D that developed target style toning while sitting in a "Harris" folder since new. These two make the BU 1943 look kinda drab.
  • This e-grading is difficult but fun. My money is on...genuine, base on the gentle, even blending of colors. I would quickly change this to "fake" if the owner described the lustre as 1) colorful, but dull or 2) suggested the lustre appeared "washed out".

  • The purple and greens are legit colors for copper corrosion. The coin was probably stored someplace with high humidity. Purple is the first stage in copper corrosion. You will see Original end roll coins with similar, albeit, not as stunning color quite often. I think this one is probably on the border of environmental damage and believe PCGS would grade it a BN.

BTW nice to see you on the board. Many of us run into you on ebay and also purchased coins from you.

You can partially blame me...I asked about him on the board because I was pissed off that he kept outbidding me. image
  • I have a bunch of lincoln's that are toned. They are uncirculated and they look nothing like that. My impression is AT. That is my gut feeling when I see that. Sorry to say that but its just my feeling and my opnion.

turned out to be a totally worked (heavily so) whizzed/buffed set in open air scam coin....
  • Send a note to that seller and I think you will find that the buyer, Pepperdoodles (doops), has returned the coin for a refund. Pepperdoodles won't let a buyer (Segoja) return his $1,500 1956 Type 1 PR-66 Cameo Franklin, but you can rest assured he made that seller refund his money. What hypocrisy?? image

you TOTALLLY STUPID IDIOT. it's one thing for another cameo dealer hoping to get a triple up hit from a 6cam type 56 half to a type 1 6dcamhalf (even though i clearly said i had tried it several times) then wanting to renege beacuse he wasnt so sure of his own abilities to sell a pq coin or even make another try his own self from a

also, idiot. doyou not realize ebay has been looking at every single one of your "ask seller a question" emails that go through them that pertain to EVERY SINGLE buyer or seller we've transactd with on ebay for well over 3 mos now??
YOU are going down in a bad bad way....any investigator 101 can figure you out,i'm going for the kickoff..
too many are going to be surprised you are the one behind all this obsession with "pepperdoodles tracking" you consume your entire day watching every move we make and emailing every buyer and seller of ours
i have stacks of emails from those both good deals and not so good deals from those just letting us and ebay know of your auction interferences upon us wether deals were ok or not. the more important issue is your invasion into trying to harm our business because you are a punk and cant hang and even soe deals that go south folks are at least letting us know you are pestering them trying to come up with more crap from your trap....you WILL go down over this. c/u vips are looking, ebay is watching, many are greatly concerned of your axe you keep grinding...you're just still a collector tryingto be a real dealer that you wont ever be and are threatened by my presence. that is a crying shame
i'm going to bust your ass wide open jack and your so stupid you hadnt even figured that out yet or just flat out dont care, not rallysure which applies the most

  • WOW im sencing a little hostility. All this over a lincoln cent come on guys there way more important things then this lincoln. Now come on if pepperdoodles wants do buy it that his or her business. I dont give a flying rats butt, if they did buy it. Its not my money and its not anybodys elses money. So all the name calling is just kind of infantile.

  • Hey Pepperdoodles, you don't seem to read so well. I said, "Send a note to that seller and I think you will find that the buyer Pepperdoodles (doops), has returned the coin for a refund." I NEVER said that I had contacted the seller. I didn't say it because I NEVER have. I didn't have to. Your practices are quite transparent.

All of your "huff and puff and blow your house down" is a joke.

Tell me Pepperdoodles (doops), why are e-mailing Greg Marguili BEGGING him to lay off of you?

oh, and another thing... you guys would not believe the folks like wayne, joel, hall, etc are all getting a kick out of seeing your crap on here at trying to make me look bad. you hadnt changed anyone's minds about us or the way we conduct good business not one iota. in fact your making yourselves look like the complete babbling baby idiots that you no doubt are..we call ya'll "pestering peons" we wish would not wast our time whe you come try to play dealer with us or them,etc..
  • I can't believe that a professional like doops could get suckered like that. I bet he was upset when he found out he couldn't triple his money on that gem. (Ha Ha.) Only wish I could have seen the look on his face when he opened it.
  • Well, I happen to like the cent ol' PDiddy Peppernoodle Poodle won in auction. BTW, was it returned Doops?

Its your choice, of course, to answer. Anyway, if this individual is sooooooo bad, then save us all, and expose this DCHUMP as you say.

Are there legal restrictions preventing you from doing so? Or, are you setting up the story with a beginning, middle, and end?

Outside of having to blast others blasting you, most of your posts, to me, have been OK, if not entertaining.

OH, please, DOOPs, please save me from the wickedness of the DCHUMP and show me the way. I NEED help. You can be the big toe on the foot of my numismatic existence. Kscope

Peppdoodles (Doops)- If you find the good Members here to be "complete babbling baby idiots" and "pestering peons", then why o' why do you bother coming here to mess up our neighborhood? You certainly have nothing positive to add and your obsessive, compulsive disorder is severe need of medication. Give it a rest. But first give Segoja the refund he is due.
