I would probably give a little higher than F-12, IMO, it is at least a F-15, I think it might just have enough to make Vf-20.
The reverse is just a tad short in the central section of the eagle and claw area.

Original coin, the small area of crust in the top corner would probably be fairly easy to remove without messing up the coin.

  • I'd say F-12, reverse is too weak.

This is almost a perfect example of Fine. Not close to VF.

    IMHO. Joe.

I agree with the F-15 grade. I don't know what the goo is on the stars, is it sort of soft like tar or hard?
  • Lanlord-boy is that picture distracting-thanks!image
so should I put in a F-12 bid and if it doesn't go to auction see if he bites?

  • I'm not sure, but I believe this coin was struck with a close collar. As such, you should be able to find a more evenly struck coin. Regardless, if I were buying a Fine or VF I'd probably wait for one with more even full rims, but especially if it is in fact a close collar coin. Just my two cents.

If anyone knows for sure how these were struck, please let me know.

Yes, the Capped Bust half dimes were struck in a closed collar, as were the dimes and quarters after 1828.

I would go F15 on that.

I have some experience with that seller. He sells nice coins, but prices them rather stiffly or occasionally will overgrade slightly. I'd say both happened in this case. Not a bad little coin, but I would pass on it. An equal or better one should be available for less. And I would shoot for at least a (true) VF. This one is the lowest-mintage date of the series, but doesn't seem to demand much premium for that.

(Edited to add that the aforementioned seller is a decent guy and easy to do business with, despite my two criticisms above.)

  • Solid obverse fine, however, on the reverse, the coin rim begins to merge into the design, indicative of a lower grade for the reverse. Overall, a low end Fine.
