Coin Sets to complete?

Im getting started on coin sets. I hear about US Type sets and short sets and so on.

Where do I find a list of sets that I can complete?

If you want to complete sets others have thought up, look at the Set Registries for date and type sets. You may also want to look at Dansco and Whitman albums to see which coins they include.

I think it is more interesting to look through the Red Book to find a series that you like, then design your own collection. You may want to include some varieties others leave out, or perhaps leave some out that many others include.

Type sets can be whatever you want them to be. It could be "proof gold coins of the 20th century" (that would cost a fortune) on one end of the spectrum, or "Lincoln cent types" (really cheap) on the other.

Unless you are talking about the specific type sets recognized by the PCGS and/or NGC registries, you define what the type is, which is what is cool about type sets. There is no "official" list of type sets.

"Short sets" are another ill-defined term. It just means part of a larger set. The one most often encountered is the Walking Liberty half-dollar short set which by convention means 1941-47.

Shiroh's idea of looking through the Redbook is a good one.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I got the chance to be at the Baltimore Show a month ago and from walking booth to booth I found the Walking liberty and the SAE are my favs.

Thats gonna be 2 heavy albums when I get done with them.
