Buy the coin not the holder

This is one of my favorite coins that I have in a ICG holder. The colors are just liquid like. They jump right off the coin.

    Got Morgan?

For some reason there are a lot of really nice toned Morgans in ICG holders. I'm assuming that it's because the submitters thought they would get a better grade than if submitted to PCGS or NGC. I've owned a number of nice ones in ICG holders and for the most part I didn't think they were given any higher grade for the color than the other services would have. That's a real pretty one. Thanks for sharing.

Morganluver-- You are right, I have 9 Morgans with color in ICG holders. Most have this kind of toning. The other thing I notice about ICG is that some of the coins in there holders have color but no luster. I have a couple like that. Nice coins that just do not have great luster. I have an 1887-o proof like that is just amazing. I will post a picture of it when I am happy with the results. I just can not seem to capture the proof like fields in it just yet. But I'm working on it. The 87-o grades ms65 and is all there. GSAGUY saw it at the ANA and could attest ot its quality.

Even lustrous coins are hard to reproduce properly with a scanner, they just don't come out showing well.

Wow, an 87-O PL with color, now that's a rare bird. Is it ICG too, and if so do you think it's properly graded. As you know it takes a huge price jump in 65. Are you going to be at FUN next month because I'd love to see it?

    Morganluver,

Yep, Tonedollars' 87-O PL is a really nice piece. In fact, he's got a collection full of really nice pieces, some that are better date dollars that are tough to find, especially with nice color. He's well on his way to assembling one of the best collections in the country.

Morganluver I feel its a true 65. I had a friend of mine who was a finalizer at PCGS look at it and he thought it was graded correctly. That plus my own feeling on it was enough to convince me to buy it. As I said GSAGUY has seen it and he thought it was a nice piece. It is an expensive piece in 65 never mind proof like and toned to boot.

Thanks GSAGUY. That means a lot coming from you. Considering some of your coins, that I would love to own. (hint, 90-cc) Also GSAGUY has provided me with some veeeeerrry nice coins for my collection.image

I'm just curious - did you do any computer color manipulations? (computer artificial toning - CAT)

The reason I ask is my ICG labels are a little greener.

Or, they were worried about the higher risk of a body bag for AT.

Note: The above statement is not meant to insinuate that I think the coin being discussed is artificially toned. I wouldn't know real from AT if it bit me on the butt. The above is meant simply to reflect the reality that coins frequently get bagged at PCGS even when they're real.

It's not necessary to do any software manipulation - or any editing at all - to change the color of a holder label.

I agree with Russ' comments re ICG....and I own a number of ICG-graded toned Morgans.

sinin-1 That is the picture as it was taken. The reason that it might be lighter ( and this is just a thought) was the day I took the pictures it had just snowed out and it was real sunny. I took the pictures using a 35mm camera and had the film transfered to a disc. I also used my wifes cutting board covered with aluminum foil to reflect more light on the surface of the coin. This, I think washed out some of the color. The it self has great luster more so than the picture.

The type of toned Morgans TONEDOLLARS has shown would NOT be body bagged by PCGS or NGC. When it comes to rainbow toning on Morgans these Services are the best. I also like ICG as they seem to be very fair with these coins, but like NGC do slightly reward (maybe .5?) the grade for the eye appeal and color.

Russ That may be true, but I was refering to the toned coins that are no question naturally toned. People submitting a questionable toned coin to ICG hoping that they would slab it is another story.

I really want to see that coin now, especially since it has received basically unanimous approval grade wise from some of the seasoned pros. If you can't make it to FUN, please post a pic when you think it's right. Oh, if I could just have some of the coins back that I've owned over the years I'd be a happy camper. It's been too long since I've held a few Monsters in my hands.
  • I've always found ICG to be very accurate in their grading of the Morgans. Most importantly, I've found their grading practices to be extremely consistent. I'm not always trying to hit a moving target! image

I personally really like rainbows. When it comes to rainbows, the only holder I wont buy is ACG... and that's out of principle. The value is tied directly to the eye appeal. I dont think many rainbow collectors care about the holder. If it's PCGS, that's a nice perk. NGC, ICG, ANACS... those will work to.

Oh, you mean like the only body-bag I've ever gotten from PCGS that was exactly (same toning, same coin, same year) like one submitted by another forum member around the same time, yet his was slabbed?
