Acct Hair Kennedys and Pointed 9 Dimes

I read every message concerning these two topics and my question is "why". We all know the 1964 Kennedy proofs were retooled and the early ones became known as the accented hair. Our buddy Russ has discovered that '64 proof sets with a pointed 9 dime always seem to have an acct hair. So why was the dime modified when the Kennedy half was? The dime proof production would be independent of the proof half dollar, yet these two seem to track with each other. If we don't get a good answer, and fast, the virgin '64 proof sets out there don't stand a chance. Just wondering.

Good question, and something I've been wondering about myself. One thing I should note, though, is that while 100% of the sets I've gotten with a pointed nine dime have contained the Accented Hair, it is a very tiny sample compared to total mintage population. It could very well be that I may yet encounter one where that isn't the case.

I suspect that the two coins weren't changed at the same time. I believe the Kennedy was changed first, and the dime was changed some time later. But because no one looks for the Pointed 9 dime, it's not been noticed. So all sets with AH Kennedys have Pointed 9 dimes, but some non-AH sets do also.

I have no evidence to back it up, it's just my opinion.

I have one set with a pointed 9 and a non AH Kennedy. I have looked that thing over multiple times and even the seriph on the I in Liberty indicates the regular Kennedy (darnit).

Russ, here are four pics, there is an entire set with pointed 9 dime and regular half, a close up of the dime and half, then a full pic of the blunt 9 and AH half and a close up of the dime and half. The pics are fairly low res because of the max image size. If you want better images I can email them.

The first one is not a pointed tail nine dime. The second one does appear to be a normal tail, and that is certainly an AH half.

is there perhaps three different "9"s on the dimes? That 9 is definitely longer and more rounded than the blunt 9, but I agree it doesn't come to a complete point.
