Plonking trolls

It seems to me, on usenet groups of years gone by, there was a custom where if somebody was trolling or flamebaiting, people would respond with "plonk".

Plonk.

That would be the extent of the reply. Just the one word. Once you plonked, you would refrain from further posting in that thread.

I don't know if that would work around here... If a few people plonked a thread, would other people leave well enough alone, and let the thread die?

The next time you read something stupid/incendiary in a thread, just say...

plonk.

Well, the constant TTT ing and people writing (which I can be accused of here on this thread ) "I agree" brings the thread to the top where it stays fresh. The benefit of usenet (which is still going on strong after 20+ years) is that the thread doesn't auto pop up to the top. Of course, individuals can turn that feature off here, but it's a helpful feature for good threads.

It was used on littlewicher who did his best (with apparent approval from CU) to destroy the forum.

Greg - I dont think a single troll or group of trolls are capable of destroying the Forum.

Too many bonds of friendship and trust have been established. While trollish behavior

can be disruptive, they generally fade away in time, and all is again as it was.

Bear, were you there when he went on his posting rampage? He would go thru several PAGES of posts and respond to EVERY post with "I concur" or "I don't know" or "Someone else will have than answer" or "That's an interesting question". All the old topics were brought to the top and new ones were buried. People gave up on the forums. Some haven't come back. The forums were unusable for a while. The forum members had to run him off because he was a protected animal on the CU list.

I think he was finally banned. Someon resisted banninghim since he was a "kid" even though MANY forums members screamed he was really a troll. When he finally admitted to being a troll that is the last I saw of him.

I don't know if he left on his own or he was banned. Either way, it was a long time coming.

Greg - I was fooled by the little Troll. I actually felt sorry for him.

I was led down the primrose path, by a kid, how embarrassing. I guess you and others had him pegged

from day one.
